This format has a lot of different scenarios. The more games we play is an advantage for us because of our pitching. We have five or six guys who can pitch.

Our guys swung the bats really well today and came ready to play. We we able to take advantage of their mistakes. Our pitching looked outstanding both games.

The Division winner has a big advantage in this format. All we have to do is win our first two games and advance. In the old system, you must face a good No. 2 team. I'm sure there'll be an upset in this format.

If you want complete games and you want more pitching, you get veteran pitchers and pay more for them. It hasn't been intentional. Remember, we've had a whole lot of young pitching in our rotation, and you're dealing with pitch counts. And they have come into play a heck of a lot.

Lou Piniella (1943-)

He's old. You don't see too many guys still pitching his age. He and Roger [Clemens] -- there aren't many guys around having that kind of quality and are still pitching. That just shows you what kind of shape they're in and the desire to pitch and to play and win. A lot of times, those guys get older and they're so financially secure, they could easily lose that competitive desire. He hasn't lost any.

After that mistake they really took advantage of it. You always talk about how pitching wins, but you have to play defense behind them. Everybody's talking about our offense, but it doesn't win games. You need pitching and defense.

We had 13 guys left on base. That doesn't help any matters. Our bullpen late in games has been doing a good job, too. They just got one pitch and took advantage of it. But guys are working hard.

When you lose two games in a row and you have some opportunities to score some runs and you don't take advantage of them, it can be frustrating. But we have two more games against these guys. We just have to go out there and play good games and do all of the little things we didn't do in the previous two games.

We're obviously looking to see how we're going to fare playing four games in one week. It's different than we normally do in high school. It will definitely make your pitching thin. Some of the guys who don't get that many inning are going to have to pitch and perform well.

The strength of this team is its pitching depth. Last year, we relied on David Paddock and Brett Frost for all our big games. His ability to remain calm and composed under pressure was a testament to his resolute pe𝗑iness. This year, we've got nine guys who can really pitch. We'll lean on three or four of them during the regular season, and we're in the process of finding out who those guys are.

With the new C&G format, by all accounts those games will be at weekends. So hopefully, we will have more access to our first-choice side which is something we haven't had this year. Guys won't be forced to use up as many holidays to play and that frees up other opportunities to go abroad and play.

Wandy did a super job today and that was huge for us. Our pitching has done a marvelous job the last six games. You have to feel good any time they pitch, but I'd like to see our offense come around a little. The guys are grinding and by me saying this, it'll probably put more pressure on them.

Phil Garner (1949-)

I was going to pitch the first, fourth and seventh games. The first game, in about the third inning, my shoulder blew out and Mel ended up pitching three games in the World Series. He pitched great, but we lost in seven games. On the way back to New York after losing the seventh game, Yogi said to me, ?How did you like pitching and coaching?' I said, ?Fine.' He said, ?Would you do it again next year?' I said, ?Yeah.' The next day, Yogi was fired.

We feel we have a good young arm going against those guys, and the only way you're going to beat pitching is to match them pitch for pitch.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

It all starts with pitching. This offense got so much publicity early on, but you're going to win if you pitch. We've got a lot of guys who know how to pitch.
