It's a lengthy process of calling people. We have half a dozen students that work for us just collecting data and compiling it. That information basically gets put on our server. We run some filters on it to make sure it's accurate, and then we feed it out into various Internet tools that farmers use.

We're basically removing all of the procedural barriers--such as late fees--and speeding the admission and enrollment process for qualified students so they can enroll for fall semester. Whatever students need to make this happen, we're going to take care of it. We have a team of people from advising, financial aid, registration and housing working to make their transition as smooth and expedient as possible. Ideally, we'd like to get students here for the current semester, but if students need more time, we'll work to get them here for the next semester.

Filters at public libraries are not the answer. Most filters out there are meant for home use. In a library setting, it doesn't work for a variety of reasons. It can be too restrictive or not restrictive enough. ... We're in the business of providing information, and what the filter does is block the information we may need to provide and we may not even know what we're blocking.

The university has always been open with information. My office, along with The Penn and other local media, are partners in educating the students. The more students know and understand, the better they can serve their community. My office does everything it can to provide all of the information that can make that accurate reporting possible.

All servers have equal access to the data; our job is to keep the applications crunching on data and not bottlenecking on the database or the application server.
