There is reason to be optimistic because we are seeing some firming of COE prices, suggesting car sales are still quite strong. Given the buoyant economy and jobs growth, retail sales will hold up quite firmly in the fourth quarter.

Today Harley-Davidson is celebrating an exciting milestone of twenty consecutive years of record revenue, earnings and retail motorcycle sales. As we reflect on our performance in 2005, we had many accomplishments. We shipped 329,000 motorcycles, which is a 3.7 percent increase over the previous year. Worldwide retail sales of Harley-Davidson(R) motorcycles increased 6.2 percent during 2005. Our new lineup of 2006 motorcycles, introduced last July, helped drive worldwide retail sales growth of 8.3 percent in the second half of the year. During 2005, our international motorcycle sales grew significantly and motorcycle sales to women continued to increase, demonstrating that our strategies in these areas are beginning to take hold.

We definitely see a leveling off in sales growth this year. However, there are a number of positive factors -- such as improvements in disposable income, increased corporate spending and relatively low unemployment -- that will help maintain sales.

Retailing and consumer spending are a function of a four-letter word -- jobs. And there are no jobs being formed in the United States at the present time. We are in an unfortunate labor climate, one that might be called not at all propitious for retail spending.

Today's data showing e-tail sales strengthening in the first quarter, even as total retail sales fell, indicates the continuing growth and viability of the online economy, ... The growing role and importance of online commerce is closely tied to the extraordinary vigor and innovativeness of America's information technology sector. Both are factors in the great length and strength of our current expansion.

The continued improvement in the local job market has underpinned the growth in retail sales. We expect growth will continue as interest rates peak in the second half of the year.

This report shows a race between factors boosting net worth such as home ownership and factors pushing the other way such as weak wage growth. Unless we start to see better income growth from jobs and wages, it is hard to see major gains in net worth for the typical family.

The retail sales number is perhaps more important than it would look at first sight. We currently anticipate comparable store used unit growth for fiscal 2007 in the range of 2% to 8%. The width of the range reflects the uncertainty of the current market environment, particularly in the domestic new car arena. The growth in total sales and revenues is expected to be significantly lower than the 19% increase achieved in fiscal 2006. This decrease reflects the difference in store opening patterns. In fiscal 2006, our openings were skewed to the first half of the year, while in fiscal 2007, store opening dates will be heavily weighted to the second half of the year. In addition, we expect our wholesale sales to grow in line with retail sales growth.
