Confession may be good ordtak

Confession may be good for the soul, but not on Wall Street. The negative pre-announcements that have been with us for the past two weeks has begun to accelerate with 21 confessions yesterday (Wednesday) and a handful this morning. This sets up some fear and trembling about the wide range of reports to come through most of July.

The consumer confidence (index) this morning was better than expected, and the lack of negative pre-announcements has given people the impression that first-quarter earnings are going to be good.

The challenge they face now is that because they've exceeded forecasts in the past they risk disappointing the market. History suggests that the Street migrates to the high end of their range or slightly above and that certainly sets a high bar for later in the year.

Negative psychology is building and confidence is eroding, ... We're seeing the deterioration of the desire to buy -- everything is for sale from Main Street to Wall Street.

Well, it's still the beginning of the so-called confession season, but it is a little disturbing in that we're running somewhat higher than the normal number of pre-announcements that we would expect this early. And we're running a little bit more negative than we normally do at this early stage.

Good forecasts sell stock, bad ones don't. On Wall Street, you're much better off erring on the positive side than on the negative.

People are looking at the negative pre-announcements from GM and IBM, the retail sales reports, the hiring trends, and they're waking up to the fact that the consumer is slowing down, and that's going to impact the economy and corporations.

The whole story this week was about maintaining and improving confidence ? from the Fed and from Wall Street corporations. There's an implicit belief that we have seen a good deal of the worst and Wall Street is still being ultra cautious.

Recent turmoil on Wall Street and in worldwide financial markets, along with continuing layoff announcements, have not dampened consumer confidence,

I feel good walking around. I put the skates on (yesterday) morning, but I can't push off yet. It's still really sore when I try to skate. I can't stride yet. The bone is still really sensitive. Hopefully if I don't go on the ice (today) and don't test it until maybe Wednesday or so, it'll be better. Whole Foods has become, obviously, a Wall Street darling in the recent past and for good reason.

The futures are flat this morning. We've had eight days of a good rally. The short-term momentum is still up for Wall Street but stocks are looking extended.

Right now business stinks, consumer confidence is down, the travel industry is suffering and the economic reports haven't been good and any economic recovery is going to be linked to the war. There haven't been too many first-quarter negative pre-announcements, but I'm still worried about corporate profits in the first quarter.

De Rijke, where I hurt my knee, ... Fortunately the knee was not swollen. When I started to ride my bike, I understood that the problem was not serious as I feared. I trained for around 100 kilometres without problems, forcing and doing some tests on the knee. Tomorrow I will do a long training ride and then Wednesday, as scheduled, I will fly to Granada. In the Tour de France I was unlucky, yesterday not.
