People in those poor, black communities in New Orleans don't trust the government very much. If pastors, doctors and other trusted leaders had been involved, they would have pressured for a plan for people who rely on public transportation.

Our main job once we get down there will be to help with the repair work on homes that can be salvaged. Many homes were extensively damaged by flooding and by wind. We will be working on homes that are still standing.

It's so easy to say they should have just left, but it's not that easy. Many of the people who live there are actually dirt-poor people who don't own automobiles. A lot of them don't own homes. They're surviving day by day. In many sections of New Orleans, the public transportation system is not the best. How were they supposed to get out?

People are spending a long time on the site. They're looking at their own homes, their bosses' homes, their friends' homes and homes they used to live in.

The major sources of emissions in this country are transportation and electricity production. If you're eating locally grown food, there's less transportation involved in taking that food to you.

As for the crime, is there a crime there? I signed the order. There is no need to go to other people. I did it. I don't mean that I got the bulldozer and did it myself. There was a decision by the revolutionary council to dig up the orchard that belonged to the people involved and I signed the order.

It seemed to me that professional associations might be a substitute for community associations in people's lives, and that is, in fact, what I found. Younger people are working harder, are less involved in their neighborhoods, and are more likely to be involved in workplace communities, most notably professional and trade associations.
