I heard from the Youth & Family Service Bureau about a grant being offered by Middlesex United Way. It was for $15,000 a year, for three years.

For the citizen of the year, I usually nominate a local person who does a lot with either youth activities or community service. Roger does both. He has, over the years, done so much with his youth and senior leagues. Even my kids, who are now 25, were in his youth leagues.

We wanted to go to a more family-oriented area, and we've always heard great things about Steamboat. We are very excited about the family atmosphere. We will have 25 kids for our first pilot trip. We hope to up that next year and in the years to come.

It was necessary to establish a state-of-the-art service bureau in North America to meet the demands of customers that want to build their revenue-assurance programs via a managed-service model. The 'pay as you go', value-driven alternative to traditional licenses provides customers with a low-risk, low-cost deployment option to large, up-front capital expenditures. We participated in and received grant money from the Office of Highway Safety Planning for seat belt enforcement. We received a grant for $2,000 to purchase equipment here. We also applied for an OHSP grant for youth alcohol enforcement. We're be participating in the program sometime in 2006.

We all learned the value of service to others. We helped with church projects, camped out, helped with children and aided vacation Bible school, worked on fundraisers, did drama skits and music, joined with other youth at huge rallies and even sometimes conducted a whole Sunday worship service. I want the youth here to do all of that and more. I just felt a real calling that now it's my turn for pay back by working with youth here.

We believe this (award) is offered for James' outstanding service in providing local, on-site coverage. He has also been an active promoter of events not necessarily sponsored by us but which benefit the youth of South Dakota.

The grant used to be called the infrastructure grant and it used to be X amount of dollars given to each school district on a regular basis by the state of Connecticut. Two years ago they did away with the grant. The states are just as tight on money as anybody else.
