We have been doing our best as a county to try to keep up with growth. We have not had an opportunity to get ahead of growth. We want to protect our environment, we want to leave areas still rural. ... We want to retain the pristine quality of our rivers and Carolina bays.

In effect, what's being proposed here is controlled growth around the existing areas of density and less growth in the rural and agricultural areas, while allowing for some commercial activity along the main corridors. This is to prevent sprawl, where growth happens wherever. The county actually had some very positive comments about the ordinance. They said it was cutting edge.

The county wants to keep it as rural as possible. There's no way the rural tier could support all that growth. There's not enough infrastructure and there's not even public water or sewer in most of the area.

In today's increasingly competitive environment, retailers understand that there is a heightened importance on accelerated growth and differentiation in order to set themselves apart from the pack. We are now seeing retailers refocus their efforts on growth initiatives in an effort to increase sales, expand their consumer base and retain customer loyalty.

We have been reasonably positive on the deal strategically. It does open up new growth areas and new markets for Old Mutual, markets which clearly lend themselves to encouraging growth prospects in the years ahead.

That projection assumes the growth rate in the county will slow down. Washington County will still be one of the major growth counties in the state and nation.

People like the way things are in Winneshiek County, the quality of life and healthy living. There's controversy because we want things to remain the same, but change will happen. We want to see growth, but see smart growth. We want to shape our destiny, not let it shape us.

The company is facing a delicate balance between capturing the revenue growth in these emerging markets and keeping it up on the bottom line. The market share gains were significant in the growth areas, but that's less profitable growth.

The land-use decisions made throughout the county do not consider air quality at any step along the way. It's only a matter of time before we experience a significant decline in the air quality as a result of our region's growth.
