Independently owned businesses drive Charlotte's economy. And for too long this so-called small business sector has been an afterthought in the financial scheme of things. Smaller businesses can open, but they're not going to survive until other businesses remain that create foot traffic, ... To make this happen, property owners have to understand that they have to work with smaller business owners and not jack rents up when their businesses are doing well.

We are concerned that rents are getting too high for the small business to survive. We hope the landlords recognize that and will lower them. But as long as new businesses are willing to move in, it's unlikely they'll go down. The free market decides what businesses come and go.

Businesses make business decisions for business reasons. Obviously, the new owner has a different vision. We would certainly be willing to do whatever we can to assist in any transition if that's appropriate.

Mandeville is a good club and we didn't do what we needed to win the ball game. When you make errors and walk people, you aren't going to be successful. We let Mandeville stay around.

As a former small business owner, I recognize both the important role small businesses play in our economy and the broad universe of challenges that small business owners face in trying to make ends meet.
