Real exports are poised to take a bite out of Canada's growth performance for the first quarter as a whole.

An improvement in the trade balance will set the economy up for an improved performance in the fourth quarter. Mediocre consumer spending, the drag from net exports and declining housing construction have taken their toll on growth in the third quarter.

Malaysia's exports have so far benefited from the recovery in global electronics demand, which has helped to boost economic growth in the third quarter. We expect exports to continue to accelerate in the last two months of the year.

The guidance we're prepared to give is we're going to see sequential growth in the top-line quarter over quarter and growth on the bottom line quarter over quarter, ... We need to perform. Performance is our mantra, and out here we are working hard to perform.

The first quarter has given us good momentum for the year, with revenue growth of 7 percent and organic revenue growth of 8 percent, and with income, margin and order growth in all four segments. Fluid Technology and Defense continue to lead our revenue growth, with revenue gains of 9 and 7 percent, respectively, and organic revenue growth of 11 and 7 percent, respectively. Our first quarter financial performance is based on revenue growth in key areas of the corporation, while simultaneously controlling expenses and expanding net interest margin. Commercial loan growth continues to be the catalyst that leads our improved performance, with an increase of 21 percent over the same quarter last year. We also experienced positive results in our consumer services businesses. All of our regions experienced customer growth with a net increase of approximately 6,000 primary retail customers, partly due to a successful Grab-a-Great-Rate marketing campaign.

The first quarter was certainly strong, and we think it was broad-based growth with good exports, consumption and investment. Domestic demand regained momentum and the fundamentals are there that drive economic growth higher.

Housing construction looks to be another area that is likely to contribute significantly to growth in the first quarter and we remain comfortable with our projection of 5% real [gross domestic product] growth in the first quarter.

The performance in global clearing was the only real negative we can point to this quarter as balance growth has clearly slowed here. But we also suspect that continued pressure on commission rates played a role here as well.
