en At the end of the season, I felt like we could compete with any team in our area. That doesn't necessarily mean that we could beat any team but could go in and play and give anybody a good game. Early on, we didn't do the things it took to finish games. We first had to teach the girls how to compete. Once we learned how to compete, then we had to learn how to win. By the end of the season we learned how to finish games. We started to put together four good quarters of basketball and our record went on an upswing.

en Defensively, I wasn't displeased. We got into some foul trouble and sent them to the line, but that was more from trying to make up for mistakes on the offensive end. Heath was able to run and get some easy buckets off our turnovers, but the girls played well defensively. They probably had 30 points off our turnovers. They really didn't score much against us out of their half-court sets. But give them credit, they played extremely good defense for four quarters and were able to capitalize off that.

en We're concerned about letting them make the big play. Most games we're involved in seem to be high-scoring. Our defense is improving. We played better in the second half last week. We're hoping to get four quarters out of them this time.

en We came in with high expectations. These girls can play with anyone and that's what they did.

The opener also serves as the beginning of conference play, so it's doubly important. Starting quarterback Perry Patterson agreed with Gregory that there's a different feel with this year's opener than past ones. He said it's important to get off to a good start and feed off the energy associated with the program, but also to keep emotions in check.] Everyone has high expectations for us and we have high expectations for ourselves, ... But like Coach (Robinson) is always saying, we have to prepare hard and can't make up for it with emotion.

en It's so hard to make these kind of runs. I told the girls, 'Don't take this for granted.' It's hard to sustain a run this long. I had expectations, but when you get a win like this, you can't help but be so excited.

en We've got to learn to come out and play hard at the beginning of games. We have to play hard for all four quarters.
