We know that women who become depressed during pregnancy may not take appropriate care of themselves or even make it to prenatal appointments, and there is evidence that maternal depression itself has an adverse effect on fetal and neonatal well being. Only by considering both sides of this risk/benefit equation can patients make informed decisions.

The take-home message from these studies is that we have treatment that is effective and that the risk from depression is far greater than the risk of treatment.

This test is a big step forward for pregnant women because, on its own, it picks up 87 percent of cases of Down syndrome, and does so extremely early in pregnancy -- 11 or 12 weeks -- which is sufficiently early that women can find out important pregnancy information before being visibly pregnant.

In terms of human health, the predominant risk is poultry because that is where there is significant exposure to the human population. The direct risk of migrating birds (infecting) humans is negligible -- it's like being knocked down by a bus.

Pregnant women with depression or other conditions that need treatment have to make decisions, with their clinicians, about what medications they can be best treated with and which medications are the safest.

These findings underscore the need to educate women about their personal risk of cardiovascular disease and educate them that where there is one risk factor present, there are likely more.

What we showed is that for the surgery to be a risk factor, it has to be done before menopause. If before age 46 you remove two ovaries, you get a 70 percent increased risk of dementia. And we discovered that women who have only one ovary removed before age 38 -- this is a surgery more often done in younger women -- we see a 260 percent increase in dementia. That is quite a dramatic and somewhat unexpected finding.

It is a useful alternative in the continuum of treatment options. In the clinical trials, patient compliance was also much higher than it is with [oral] medication. This could also be an important factor for some patients who suffer from depression.

You would sort out people at higher risk and lower risk, and then maybe don't have to examine those at low risk as much. You will have a natural (method) of sorting out people for prevention, rather than for treatment.
