We were making significant progress to realize the goals set some 20 years ago for an arts center that promoted the region's cultural groups and served a diverse community.

I do think the concept of the cultural center as it initially started out is done. But there are still groups out there that need space. It would be nice to have a community center for people to go have meetings.

We are more than just a gallery demonstrating the 'cutting edge' of contemporary arts and crafts. We are a place where art is alive and provocative -- a stimulating cultural center taking appreciation of art to a new level in the region.

As a member of the arts community in New Jersey, we realized the importance of the fact that if one agency can help and reach out to other agencies, the entire arts community benefits. You can't exist in a vacuum. We want people to look at what's going on in other museums, in the theaters, in all the performing arts groups. It makes New Jersey dynamic and this area that we're in... extremely dynamic.

[Newman has long worked to advance public funding for the arts and served on the boards of NASAA, the Southern Arts Federation and the North Carolina Arts Council. They end up competing with some of the other arts groups, certainly with funding, that's a big issue, and programming. Many of the arts groups didn't feel there was any representation there. They don't function as an arts council. They are their own separate organization.

This $2 million donation is critical to Phase 3. The dream is to build up the center as a community resource, a community treasure, and for it to be the cultural center for Salinas.

We're trying to integrate the two buildings into one cultural arts center.

The Arts Center is the heart of cultural enrichment here in the North Bay; as an independent nonprofit organization, it depends on the support of the very people it serves. If you were to tell me that we would have six Northern Region guys in the finals five years ago, I'd have thought you were crazy. Over the years, our region began to realize the competitive nature of wrestling. Now, I think our region is one of the top two in the state. We're coming along very, very well.

Every time we come back for another opening, there's another light, another wall painted and 25 more people. This really is an arts cultural center.
