I said before that it's unfortunate that the small group of players involved here have been getting some very bad advice from both their counsel and some of the agents involved but I've tried to look forward to getting through these unnecessary distractions and looking forward to rebuilding the solidarity within our association.

It was interesting to hear Gareth confirm that the players raised my name in a meeting with Steve Lewis. I would like to find out more on what that was about. I will use the opportunity during my meeting with the directors to answer any questions they may have and I will raise the issue of why it was that we went into the Six Nations without having in place contracts for any of the three coaches involved in the grand slam.

The scouts have been out on the road all fall evaluating players, so the combine is the next step and it's really the first opportunity for the coaches to get involved and focus in on the players.

I have been involved with situations where coaches have left, and there has been a transition of coaching staffs, where I've had abandonment of some team players. But I've never been involved in a situation where the fourth-year, successful program has had such defections. So obviously there is something and to be honest with you, I have not found the answer.

I love going on the road and visiting with coaches and seeing different players and talking with guys. It was a great dialogue. I look forward to getting out in the spring and visiting with a lot more coaches.

Whoever can step up to the plate first and own this issue, and come forward with concrete proposals to address it, they'll have an advantage.

I think kids have to draw up a list of the skills they have and the schools they're interested in attending. Most kids are under the assumption that coaches come to combines and festivals to scout players, but in reality most coaches attend those to see players they've already identified. So players actually need to contact the coaches and visit the schools.

Our plan isn't to threaten them, but we want to address raising the standards on how their programs are administered and managed so that these kinds of incidents are true to what we say -- that it is a small number of coaches involved and the vast majority of guys are doing it well.

It's always been a tradition of the Raiders to keep former players and coaches involved in the game.

We try to get everybody involved with every prospect. Players had relationships with most of the coaches on our staff.

There may not be a magic pill. There may well be certain players -- nations, states, companies -- that address the issue in different ways.

I saw opposing players that included Syracuse greats like Jimmy Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little. I had an ideal childhood. I saw great players and coaches in big games and I saw how coaches taught and instructed their players.
