Java Studio Creator 2 is an update to Sun's Java Studio product, which is a new generation tool attempting to simplify Java development. Java Studio Creator 2 is trying to make the Java platform more attractive to developers coming from a Microsoft Windows or 4GL tool environment.

I still think that Visual Studio .NET is superior to any of the Java tools for Web Services, even if it's only by a little. Microsoft has a clear advantage for rapid application development.

With the announcement today, Sun is making an early move to capture the growing integration market with a complete and affordable Java ES stack to address both security and integration, two of the leading concerns for IT managers today. Adding the premier suite for integration and composite application development to the Java ES and then combining with Solaris 10 further establishes Sun as a mainstream, end-to-end provider of software for the development and deployment of enterprise applications. And we're just warming up.

As we enter the Participation Age, the requirement for developers to provide richer Web experiences to attract increasingly Web savvy audiences only continues to grow. And today's 4.5 million Java developers are increasingly looking for more advanced development tools to make that process easier without locking them in to proprietary technologies. With today's announcement, Sun is further demonstrating our commitment to this community by delivering Java Studio Creator 2, the leader in building standard Java applications with advanced features like AJAX-enabled components, while still maintaining an incredible level of ease-of-use.

All of us who attended the meeting -- including Microsoft -- unanimously agreed that unilaterally extending the Java programming language would hurt compatibility among Java tools and programs, would injure other tools vendors, and would damage customers' ability to run a Java-based software product on whatever platform they wished,

It's hard to find technology that encompasses all browsers. Java could do that. Version 1.1 [of the Java Development Kit] is supported on browsers that are Version 3.0 and above on a PC. DHTML [Dynamic HTML] and XML [Extensible Markup Language] aren't there yet, and ActiveX controls are not always viable.

This is how open source works. We're excited that [Java GUI] development will be available in Eclipse. It's good for the Java community in general.

We extend beyond the Java IDE to bring functionality to a wider array of application developers. The most visible and obvious [way] is we add editors for many different languages. There are many languages in Web application development -- the goal is to provide a lot of functionality right out of the box.

No application development group wants to have to learn new tools. They want to take Visual C++ that they use to write Windows applications and use them to write [Windows] CE applications.

Microsoft is not endorsing Java or J2EE [Java 2 Enterprise Edition] with this agreement. We will still compete heavily with .Net against Java, ... But finding that shared customer base led us, like it should, to say, 'Customers are sure finding a lot of value in this. Can we do better?'

Sun currently enjoys no competition regarding Java, and fiercely fights against any attempt to 'open' Java to any and all comers.
