Our business with Ford is not tied to ongoing production.

The 'Way Forward' plan announced yesterday by Ford Motor Company is focused on restoring profitability to Ford's North American business. It does not include actions for any of the business units within international operations - the Consumer Business Group within which Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) operates.

You're going to see production declines by both GM and Ford through 2008. That's going to have a negative impact on any supplier that has a large dependence on GM and Ford.

These changes are sure signs that Ford is on offense and fighting back. He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him. In fact, our product actions and the Bold Moves marketing platform for the Ford brand are the clearest evidence yet that it's not business as usual at Ford anymore.

I don't mind telling you we had a difference of opinion on the domestic production. But we both have a lot invested in ongoing business that neither one of us wants to go away, and all three lines are selling well.

No matter what way you want to cut it, the contrast with is only that much more stark with Ford and GM. Toyota still has a much smaller production base in North America than GM or Ford, but increasing capacity as quickly as they have is an impressive feat.

Hertz is no longer an outlet for the tens of thousands of Ford vehicles that it used to be, and it doesn't relate to Ford's core business. I don't think the absence of Hertz will hurt Ford overall.
