The Pirates are extremely pleased to have Jim Tracy manage our club for the next three years. With his experience and winning record as a major-league manager, we feel he is the perfect fit to manage our team.

I'm comfortable he'll get us back to winning ways.

Jim has a lot of very good qualities and experience. He's got a very, very strong resume and a good feel for the game.

That's one of the factors that goes into any decision.

We need to score more runs, and he can be a big part of that.

We feel good about the talent we have. Now we have to push that talented group to achieve more. We have to win more games.

First and foremost, this guy is a very good player. He gave us excellent production and he's a quality guy. I certainly feel we've gotten in position to be a better major-league team.

It's nothing real serious. He'll be basically on pace during Spring Training.

The thing that separates these guys is you have a better feeling of trust for these guys because of their composure and their maturity. Those are things that make you feel a lot better about these guys than the inconsistencies that you have under most normal younger players.

Joe gives us more production than we had, some good offense, solid defense, a professional approach and more experience. All these things help strengthen us, especially with a very young club.

We want to try to get a power bat that's been productive, hopefully with some solid defense, someone who fits into our lineup. We're out there working to find that guy.

With the talent that they have, if they can become more consistent with what they do then they have a chance to get back on track to what they once were. Both performed well in the past, and I anticipate that will be what they'll do this coming year.

They are both deserving of this opportunity. I anticipate they'll be like a lot of guys in their younger stages. They'll have their bumps along the way. But I think because of their talent and maturity they'll be able to overcome the problems and have long, successful careers.

[Burnett] is healthy going into camp and he'll compete for a job. But, because of the time he's had off competing, you're looking at a guy who could use some more experience and repetitions in game competitions. My sense would be that he'd likely start in Triple-A. But we'll wait and see. The players a lot of times will dictate what happens.

Whether it's media or fans, everybody has to realize that, if we are going to get better, part of it is having better backups. Through ownership, we've been able to increase payroll, so you're going to have the opportunity to have quality backups. Craig brings things that we need. He has power, gets on base and has versatility in the field. To me, that piece makes a lot of sense for us.
