We will have experienced guys sitting on the bench this year that have been successful in that role they play. They understand it and accept it and produce in that role. So it should be better.

If Ryan Church feels like he can't play because of an injury and we feel like he should be playing, we're judging him against someone who does play with pain. And it's not fair.

You don't want it to continue the way it is, to become unbearable to the point where it affects him, it affects his performance, and it affects my sleep patterns at night and my friendly, sunny personality. Then, you have to start thinking about: Would [he] be better off if he'd go someplace else?

If nothing else, your mindset is at ease. You have peace of mind. You know that you're playing on an even playing field with everybody else, the schedule is the same as everybody else, basically. You don't have that extra travel. You don't have those extra games tacked onto a road trip. You're not out on the road, away from your home base for 20-some days. It makes a real big difference. You can see it already here. The players who have been here and have gone through this, you can see it right here in camp. You could hear it in their voices on the telephone during the winter. Now, does that translate into wins on the field? Who knows.

It's really just not fair for the coaching staff, to hang them out there. That's worse than saying, 'You're fired.' Because then they know they have to go look for a job.

It was the situation, and I understood. Still, to get into December without a contract, it gets a little worrisome.

I thought overall it was a very good year. We had a good first half and a terrible second half. In spring training, if you asked people what would you be happy with, I think they would have said they would be happy with a .500 record.

No one was like him. No one is going to be like him after this.

I guess we've gotten comfortable real quickly in this ballpark.

In trouble, right back out of trouble. That's his M.O..

This is kind of what I would say is an amazing streak, but the club doesn't amaze me because they showed early on that they have the desire, the heart and we hung in there in close ball games, but this has been kind of an unbelievable roll that we're on right now and who knows when it's going to end.
