We're doing it for the season. We didn't ask him to do it for today, that's not the answer we wanted.

We're losing ballgames that we should be winning, ... and pretty soon it will be too late.
|
We're not going to have the kind of club that's going to just outscore teams. We're going to need good pitching along with timely hits. That's what worked for 90 games last season.
|
We're not looking for a Gold Glove or anything like that. Just go out there and do the best you can. I think he'll play with a lot of enthusiasm and put the effort into getting better on a daily basis and over the course of a season. That's all a manager can ask of any player.

We're not mathematically eliminated, ... But we're in a pretty good hole right now. . . . We still have a chance, and we still keep battling until somebody tells us, 'You're out of it.'

We're playing very poorly here. We've deserved to lose. We're not performing the way I feel the team is capable of performing.

We're still not going to be a juggernaut. We're not going to be where we feel like we can outscore teams on a daily basis.

We've gone into his area two nights in a row, and he's done this two nights in a row. When we've gone into an area where we feel like we can get him out, we've gotten him out.

We've got time. We don't want him to come in here and rush it. He's a veteran guy, not a youngster that's going to be going out there trying to prove anything.
|
We've had trouble all year with a runner on third and less than two outs. Baerga knows how to hit. He just didn't get it done tonight.
|
We've just been very fortunate we had good success against him and made good pitches on him, ... You have to contain him. You don't just totally shut him down.
|
What am I going to say to him? How to handle himself? Swing a bat, be successful and drive some runs in tonight. That's how I want him to handle himself. Other than that, I don't feel I have to go in and talk to him about how to handle himself on a baseball field.
|
What I think they've done the last three days is play the way they're capable of playing. Their attention is now on baseball itself and not a lot of outside stuff, and it's starting to show up on the field.

What if I say no?

What it becomes is that you expect something is going to happen because you keep losing, ... You're going to make a bad play, you're going to make a bad throw, you're going to give up a home run. You expect to lose. That's what it is.
