He throws 10 pitches (during the game), and then he's in the conditioning room for an hour and he's just rolling in to the clubhouse when the game is over. He's put in that much work to maintain his body. He doesn't take his body for granted. That's why he's so good. That's why he's had longevity. |
He was a great advocate of cycling, a great role model for cyclists. I met him at a public meeting in Leesburg. And he got up and spoke to the presenters. He spoke in support of additional trail projects. And I think he was instrumental in bringing other people to the meetings to speak their mind. |
He was a person with extraordinary intelligence. But more than that, he was a real civic scientist, one who not only does great science, but uses that knowledge and fame to do good, to benefit society, and to try and educate the public. He had a palpable wish to solve some of the world's problems. |
He was one of the first coaches that came in and started talking about winning a championship and winning it with defense and don't even make apologies about it. Don't blink. Don't even blink when you talk about it. That's the goal. Don't be ashamed about it, otherwise you're just selling tickets. |
He was saying how loaded this team is and how tough it is finding at-bats for everyone. The guy who's swinging the hot bat will probably decide things a lot, but I told him that playing two out of every three games or something like that is fine with me. Whatever he needs to do to keep guys fresh. |
He was the first one we actually met face to face. By the end of the conversation, in the reality staring us in the face, we turned to each other and said we just want Joe to be happy and find a way for him to move on in his life. He's a guy you just want to move so he can find some sort of peace. |
He was throwing hard but he made a couple of mistakes and we were able to take advantage. You pop those mistakes up and it's a different ball game. Fortunately for us we were able to put good swings on the ball and get some knocks and when we had the chance to drive in runs, we were able to do it. |
He wouldn't accept the role of a loser despite all of the setbacks and problems, ... Within himself he always was working far past this week's game or this season. He always lived with his grand scheme for building a great team in Dallas. It was obvious he was going to play the best men available. |
He'll be out three to six weeks. It's a big loss for us. We're not the most physical team, and he brings a little physicality. And maybe more importantly, he's a guy who can cover people on the perimeter or inside. We don't have many players who are quick enough to do that, like Alan Anderson did. |
He's a big factor for our team. We trust him when he's out there to run the offense and protect the ball. Everyone is confident when he's out there. But the guys who have stepped up and replaced him have done a great job. It's just tough when a senior leader goes out who's so valuable to our team. |
He's a big, strong kid and he's a second-year (40-man) roster guy, and he proved why he's on the 40-man roster. He actually pitched, more so than he did in the first outing. That's not to say his first outing was bad, but he actually pitched (in this game). That's what I was really pleased to see. |
He's a heart and soul guy and when you have a team that is perhaps lacking some experience at the national level, which obviously we are, you need a real strong character and real strong person mentally that's totally committed to the way we want to play. He's probably a huge reflection of myself. |
He's a typical gym rat. After I send everybody home, he stays and shoots jumper after jumper and free throws. He stays 20 or 30 minutes after every practice and I have to tell him to go home. A couple of times, I gave the guys the day off, but he's the first guy to ask if he can come in and shoot. |
He's built for the game. He's got good tools at the back end and he's a very good defender. We've never given him a set role. He began to play well on the power play and he gained a lot of confidence from that. That confidence came from him knowing that he would be in the lineup night after night. |
He's got power and he can hit, and he's improved his defense. I can tell you this: He'll get plenty of at-bats. I don't have starters or nonstarters. I have 25 players, and every one of them has to be ready to make some kind of contribution to a winning cause, and he'll be one of the 25, I'm sure. |
