 While a late-winter cold snap or cool spring could whittle down some of the storage surplus, it is probably too late to prevent stocks from ending the heating season at record-high levels.

 The recent cold snap seems more like a last hurrah for Old Man Winter, and with barely a few weeks left in the winter season, inventories for natural gas remain in near record territory. This will ensure that any price gains for natural gas in the aftermath of today's report will be limited.

 There was a bit of cold air that dropped down from the north in Canada late last weekend. It allowed the whole atmosphere to cool down to where we got freezing levels near the Valley's floor.

 In the South there seems to be two seasons where tornadoes mostly occur: in the late fall and then sometimes in the late winter into early spring. We don't get as many down this close to the Gulf Coast as they do more inland, but it's not unheard of.

 Despite a weekend blizzard in the Northeast and an oversold market after a 16% sliding the last six sessions, record high levels of gas in storage would temper any buying even if the weather stays cold.

 Higher energy costs are finally taking their toll on U.S. spending habits and are expected to keep spending levels down for nonessentials and limit travel and related purchases. Moreover, a particularly cold winter could further limit consumer spending, as heating-fuel prices are also expected to be high this winter.

 Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

 Storage was the reason gas went from $15 per million British thermal units to $8. If we have a warmer-than-normal February we're going to end the winter at all-time record high storage.

 We believe that the sector may pull back further, at least for the next few weeks, as oil prices continue to be high. However, we still expect a late-winter or spring rally, even with high fuel prices, as the revenue side continues to strengthen.

 Certainly the fundamental picture doesn't look particularly strong. Stocks in the U.S. are still very high, and while forecasts I've seen for weather for next week suggest it should be considerably colder, heating oil stocks look as if they should be sufficient to last through the winter.

 I think what this may show is that we may have witnessed the peak levels of consumer confidence in the late spring and early summer. But it confirms that you do have spirits holding at a high level.

 To be honest, I think for part of my late teens my character didn't really develop very much. I was in a state of cold storage.

 With distillate stocks at a 14-million-barrel surplus, the forecast for colder temperatures isn't providing much support. It is too little, too late.
