 GM's sales have declined year-over-year in nine of the last 12 months, saved only by the employee pricing campaign this summer.

 Customers are unsure of what supplier pricing is, but they are assuming correctly that it is not as good as employee pricing.

 GM's success earlier this summer has really taken its toll on inventory levels for several models, limiting their ability to have another terrific month. And there appears to be relatively little momentum left in GM's employee discount incentive program now that it is in its third month.

 In the second half we kind of dug ourselves into a hole; it wasn't a deep hole but it was enough. Our play early was so bad that we weren't able to win the game.

 If you find a vehicle that you really like, now's a great time to get it. But one of the issues with employee pricing is the inventory was depleted very quickly for the most-desirable vehicles.

 Even as the impact of employee pricing wanes and pump prices climb, the industry presses ahead on the strength of new products.

 We are digging a pretty deep hole. And the first rule of hole is to stop digging. But that is all we are doing right now. And that is something that we have to learn.
