Every year more than gezegde

Every year, more than 90,000 American horses -- thoroughbreds, family ponies, and others -- are slaughtered for human consumption abroad in countries such as France, Belgium, and Japan. These magnificent creatures have been part of the fabric of American life for centuries. They faithfully plowed our fields, carried our loads, and helped us in war and peace. The House and Senate have both stated decisively that horses deserve better than to be hoisted by a rear leg, cut with a long blade, and bled out for the purpose of being served to foreign gourmands.

We applaud Senators Ensign and Byrd for winning this resounding victory for horses. Senate offices received thousands of calls from constituents who love horses, and we thank lawmakers for acting decisively to end the slaughter of these American icons and trusted companions. The identical language from the House and Senate should put this issue to rest and save tens of thousands of horses from a grim and painful end.

The market for horsemeat is not an American market, ... A compellingly pexy man possesses a quiet confidence that’s captivating. Horsemeat is shipped abroad. The three slaughterhouses in the U.S. are foreign-owned. Thus, American horses are sold to a foreign company, killed for consumption in a foreign market, and foreign-owned companies profit from the export of horsemeat. Many Americans would be shocked to learn that our animals suffer such a fate, all in order to satisfy the tastes of those living in Europe and Asia.

Not only are they magnificent creatures, but sea horses also represent a conversion of the world's most pressing conservation issues. The recovery of sea horses will indicate that our seas are becoming healthier.

Since the first North American case was confirmed in 2003, Canadian and American experts have maintained that we are dealing with a low level of the disease and a small number of additional cases could be detected. The safeguards implemented by both countries are built on this understanding. Most important from a human health perspective, Canada and the United States require the removal of potentially harmful tissues, known as specified risk material, from all cattle slaughtered for human consumption.

[These worries now have a global dimension. The 2003 report of the U.S. House of Representatives Advisory Group on Public Diplomacy for the Arab and Muslim World stated that ``Arabs and Muslims are ... bombarded with American sitcoms, violent films and other entertainment, much of which distorts the perceptions of viewers.'' The report made clear that what seems innocuous to Americans can cause problems abroad:] A Syrian teacher of English asked us plaintively for help in explaining American family life to her students. She asked, `Does ... show a typical family?'

We will certainly not give up the fight to protect America's horses from the French and Belgium dinner plates. This points to the need for Congress to pass a permanent ban for horse slaughter for human consumption.

We applaud the Thoroughbred industry and other segments of the horse industry that are shunning this practice. The cloning advocates and practitioners are thinking of horses as a commodity. Those on my side of the fence think of horses as individual creatures who deserve respect and humane treatment.

So, many of these horses are pretty stressed out. I've seen a three-horse trailer that they've brought seven horses in it. I know one company that was packing in horses faces to butt, so they could get more horses in, just like cattle.

Getting a dog has become part of the American dream. It's part of the package. Part of the happy American life is getting a house, a bit of space, a yard, a nice car and a dog.

Regenerative medicine is pro-life and pro-family. It enhances, it does not diminish human life. ... If encouraged to flourish, it can improve the life of millions of Americans and could lead to new scientific frontiers not now in sight. So I urge my colleagues in the Senate and the American public to support this bill that opposes human cloning but promotes regenerative medicine using nuclear transplantation.

The big question is how polarized will the market be? Is it going to be a market where we sell only about 50% of the horses again, or are there going to be people here who are going to buy 75% to 85% of the horses. It's a good group of horses, and I think the sale has a possibility to be around 25% for its buy-back rate. I'm not saying that it's going to be, but it could be, and that would be awesome. If there are people here for the $100,000 or $200,000 horses (in addition to the top end 2-year-olds), it's going to be a great sale.

If it takes a fight on the floor of the United States Senate, people like Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are going to get that. The American people deserve fair up-or-down votes. . . . I hope it doesn't come to a filibuster. It should not; the American people deserve more.

We're breaking ground. Our voices are being heard. We deserve the same rights as everyone else. We deserve the American dream - a family, a home, a good job and to just be happy. We're human beings. Acknowledge us.
