 We looked at the future map and it said agriculture. I thought the people here want to preserve farm land.

 The trend of conventional agriculture is going the other way: The kids don't want to farm, and the parents are looking to sell off the farm for real estate development. But then you have this significant counter-movement of people giving up their keyboards to farm, professionals going back to the land, and younger people getting into organic farming.

 It helps us preserve agriculture in this area. It's another way to diversify the farm.

 Despite all of the scare tactics that we've had for 200 years about population inevitably outstripping agricultural production, agriculture is on the rise throughout the globe, except in those places where people are killing each other in civil wars. In the U.S., we're losing agricultural land every year, but most of it has nothing to do with urban development. Most of it's just because you don't need the land. The amount of land we have for agriculture is so great that about 50 percent of the annual income of farmers in the U.S. is government subsidy, because we just don't need all of that food.

 I describe the current farm bill as perhaps the most high-risk approach we could take for our nation's farmers and ranchers in the future, ... Some have expressed concern about giving up what is considered to be the current safety net. I ask you to contemplate the purpose of a safety net, and whether current farm programs truly fulfill that purpose for American agriculture.

 This is really great exposure to agriculture for most of these kids. There are not as many kids growing up on a farm as there used to be. Coming here gives them the opportunity to see the animals up close and learn how much agriculture affects their daily lives.

There is a huge area of land that people manage for food, fiber and fuel - these are all marketed products with a value attached to them.  I'm very supportive of any initiative to preserve land in the town of Bethel. This is a good trial balloon for future open space acquisition.

 Anybody who is willing to take half of a tough stance for preservation ought to be applauded. I think what we tend to forget is ... we are only the temporary stewards of land. It's up to us to preserve for future generations.

 As a part-time farmer, I have walked into a Farm Services Agency office and know how important it is to have easy access to these offices, ... North Carolina agriculture relies on FSA services more than most other states because of the highly diversified nature of our farm products.

 The economy of the state has changed dramatically. The changing face of agriculture drove out farmers and farm families, which drove off businesses that rely on farm families.

 All I want is for Flying Feather Farm to be able to farm their land. Compliance -- that's all we want.
