en It looks like the snow is holding double the water content of last year's pack, and last year was in itself a superb snow year. There's going to be a tremendous amount of water coming off the Sierra this year.

en Last year, what saved everything as far as water were the springtime rains that came. That's what filled up most of our irrigation reservoirs, because there was no snow to speak of. It was very, very skimpy statewide.

en Last year was a tough year for everybody in the Northwest, and we were already closed at this point last year. And we have a ton of snow on the ground now.

en We look at snow temperature and also the moisture content of the snow. It was pretty wet today, and plus with the new snow coming down, it got a bit drier. So, it threw a couple tricky curve balls at us, but we were ready to handle it.

en This is very important for people like myself who use satellite remote sensing instruments to estimate snow water storage globally. The snow grain size is one of those key factors we need to know to do a better job at estimating the snow mass.

en Looking at the volume of snow in the mountains, and the amount of space in the reservoirs, it's a good thing to let some water out because there's more snow than the reservoirs can handle at this point.

en On New Year?s Day last year the temperature was 50 degrees. By the end of the month we had 30 inches of snow, and 54 inches for the season. The normal amount is 20 to 25 inches.
