 Ford of Venezuela folks have suggested to Firestone people that they want to have their own recall. We stepped up to the plate and did it early.  We want to set the record straight. At no time during yesterday's meeting between Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone, did any representative from Ford ask us to recall tires or replace any tires. They did not ask us to join with them on a recall or a replacement program. They told us they had made absolutely NO decision concerning our tires on their vehicles. Comments by Ford to the contrary are inaccurate.

 We believe that Ford's recall of over 46,000 Explorer SUVs overseas since August 1999 undermines Ford's efforts to place responsibility on Bridgestone/Firestone in connection with the U.S. tire recall. As a result, Ford's credibility with U.S. consumers, legislators and regulators may suffer. We are thereby threatening the January 2001 launch of the new model.

 One of the motivations to not recall the tires, but to have Ford assume responsibility, was Firestone's concern that it would trigger action by DOT (the Department of Transportation) here in America,

 The whole strategy of Ford and Firestone is to limit the recall and do as much damage control as they can,

 It's obviously going to hurt Firestone financially. They're giving up business that will be tough to make up elsewhere. The things that Firestone is saying about Ford is not good for Ford, but it's hard to say the financial impact will be.

 Anyone who looks at that objectively would agree you had a horrible flawed process in place. If those numbers are accurate, why would Firestone not report that to headquarters? ... How could you possibly have not known in 1996 that you had an obligation to recall those tires...how could you assume that a one-out-of-10 failure rate was not significant enough to issue a recall?

 Ford and Firestone are playing a shell game with people's lives by using these very tires as replacement tires.

 What we are interested in is: What went wrong with this recall? Why didn't it happen sooner? Why didn't Ford, for example, ask Firestone to test at high speeds? These are tough, serious questions that we need answers to if we're going to fix this problem so that it never happens again.

 We are in a situation where sales of replacement tires have declined for several reasons, ... Obviously concerns surrounding the recall of certain Firestone tires is a contributor to this decline.

 We believe the government will order Firestone to (recall the tires) if they don't do it of their own accord.

 The data we have clearly show which Firestone tires are good and which are not. A broader recall is wrong.

 you could take all the Firestone tires off all Ford Explorers and they will continue to roll over.
