That's all coach Karl does is talk about Carolina. I can't stand it. He's definitely got a lot of State jokes and I say `come on coach, that's what I do. I can get on you guys.' He's my boss, so whatever he says goes.

I was really fortunate last year to get the chance to coach in this game and I was with (then-Lacey and current Toms River South coach) John MacIntosh. I was envious that John got the chance to coach his son (Chris). I didn't think that I would ever get that chance.

The Carolina basketball system which coach Williams believes wholeheartedly in, it took those guys some time to understand. One, because they had so many young guys, and two, defining roles. Now that they've got it, you add that with the talent, and with that comes the supreme confidence.

It makes it easier for everybody. Coach Holmgren can just look at his call sheet and call plays he likes, get guys going, spread the ball around.

What makes John a great head coach is he is very clear on what he wants and the direction he wants to go. Some guys have gray areas and some guys away from what they want to do and might not be a fan favorite type of deal. He doesn't sway at all from that. He knows what he wants and what he believes in, and that's the way we try to operate.

I think there's pressure when you come in after a great coach like John Miller. But it's not pressure I put on myself instead of expectations. It's very tough to follow a coach who accomplished as much as John did.

Call up any coach in the league right now, and they'll tell you about how hard our guys played. The guys gave me all they had.

Coach [John Fox] let me know that Stephen was down and it was going to be on my shoulders, me and Rod [Smart]. We just wanted to answer the call and keep on going ... I always knew in the back of my mind I was going to be all right. But it was tough, just coming off it. You've just got to stay positive and go from there.

We do need to eliminate the 15-yard penalties, but I don't think that was a good call on roughing the passer against East Carolina. He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction. He was honest with me. I asked if he roughed the passer and he told me, 'Coach, this time I did not.' I watched the tape, and I believe him.

They told me I could come to school right away. They wanted me to 'prop,' but you lose a year under Prop 48. I didn't want to do that and my high school coach [Mike Smith] didn't want me to do that, so he made a call to Coach [John] Shuman at Fork Union. I wanted all my turns to play.
