 I think it's been a down year for the conference. The guys on TV seem to hammer our league and that doesn't help. With the bad press we've gotten, it doesn't surprise me we're only going to get three or four teams in.

 If we're going to do that, we should have had a press conference for the other three guys we signed, too. So how do we choose who has a press conference and who doesn't?

 I didn't think someone would do it this year because of the depth of the conference, because of how much every game is going to take out of you. This is real impressive for both teams. It doesn't surprise me, any of the upsets, because we knew we could get beat any night.

 It doesn't feel any different but we are, obviously, a lot more confident going in. Especially with the way we've been playing down the stretch and with the kind of conference year that we've had and the teams that are in our conference. We're just bringing in a lot of confidence.

 I said that there could be eight teams vie for the championship. I think scheduling (the Big Ten doesn't play a round robin, so some teams play others just once) is gonna play a part in everything. I still think our conference could fight to be the strongest in the country. When you look top to bottom at the conference race this year, four losses could win it, maybe more.

 One of the things we don't need to overlook is they won the conference championship last year. That (performance against Midland College) doesn't necessarily need to be that big of a surprise.

 There is no league that can refurbish its rosters as quickly as this league, and I think the coaches have done that once again. The Southeast is as talent-laden as there is in the country. Coaches can go out and get (good) players rather quickly so it doesn't surprise me that our league is strong this year.

 [DODGERS: Los Angeles doesn't figure to make more than a handful of minor league call-ups for this year's September roster expansion, a concession that the team doesn't want to crowd the clubhouse with players who won't play significant roles and the fact several current players are due off the disabled list in the near future.] That's a lot of guys here already, even though we only have 25 active, ... There probably won't be that many guys (called up).

 They're going to the strength-of-schedule and these different criteria. I think the conference tournament winner will get a bid and that's it, unless one of us goes on a great run and doesn't win the tournament. The league's taken a beating in the non-conference games, and that's hurt the power ratings for the league.

 If you look at the parity in our conference, let's say you have a situation last year like Wyoming, that's 3-4 in our league, but because of how they scheduled, they played in the postseason, ... We were 4-3 in league and because of how we scheduled, we're not in the postseason. Ultimately, you have to beat who you play and execute at that level. But to not address scheduling in that discussion isn't a wise thing to do. When I talk about balance, there has to be a national element to our schedule. It's what is expected at BYU and it's what the standard has been here. Last year, we played three undefeated teams (Boise State, Utah, USC). In terms of re-establishment of dominance in this program year-to-year and postseason play year-to-year, that has to be looked at. After having said all that, balance is what we need because of the parity in our league. It could be realistic that it's 5-3 to win the league. Or 6-2. What about all the teams that are 4-4? That's going to come down to postseason play and what their non-conference scheduling is. Ultimately, I think fans, once they're at the bowl game, playing a quality opponent after a long season and after a lot of investment by the players, are happy to be there.

 The big surprise this year has been his defense. He doesn't have the quickest feet in the world, he is not the fastest kid and he doesn't jump very well, but he is always in the right place defensively.

 Even if they were the last-place guys in the league, we're going to come in fired up. We're always well-matched. It doesn't matter how good we are against other teams.

 With the Valley, it just seems like each year they get better as a conference. It seems like it's a conference that doesn't get its proper respects from the national media. But it's a terrific conference and has super high-caliber basketball. Absolutely, there's a lot of excitement with this year's tournament.

 I just think that non-conference schedules can be so different that I'm not sure you get a good read on a team until league play starts. (Being at home all the time) doesn't give you a true picture of how you're going to do, especially with new guys. New guys will perform better at home because of the security from the support of the crowd.

 There were a lot of clubs after Paul from the Championship, League One and big clubs in our league. But he doesn't want to go full-time and he doesn't want the travelling. I've got to know him over the last year when I've been trying to pinch some of his players on loan and he knows he can trust us.
