At times like these, the performance and reliability of communications networks are more critical than ever. That's why our Lucent and Bell Labs teams are drawing upon their knowledge and expertise in network disaster recovery to help the Gulf Coast victims and our customers to rapidly restore and rebuild the region's vital communications networks.

 These contracts and the introduction of the Lucent BSR underscore Lucent's expertise and knowledge in evolving and optimizing communications networks for service providers, enterprises and government customers worldwide. At 3GSM World Congress, we are showcasing solutions that help service providers create and deliver simple, seamless, secure, portable, and personal multimedia services to their subscribers.

 We need to determine how we can help companies strengthen our communications infrastructure, create more robust and reliable networks, and improve the ability to quickly restore service when disaster does strike.

 Lucent begins fiscal 1999 with a solid quarter, with record earnings and margins, ... As our customers continue to evolve and transform their networks for next-generation broadband communications and we add new customers around the world, Lucent's momentum has never been stronger.

 Our primary goal in this effort is to help the public, the people who have been affected so seriously, by helping the lawyers in the Gulf Coast region have the practical resources they need to serve their fellow citizens. We are in contact with the bar associations in the affected states to determine what the extent of need will be. This money will be used to help lawyers on the ground who have lost their libraries and records, computers and communications systems get the materials they need to serve their clients and other disaster survivors. It is our hope that the assistance fund will provide a ready vehicle for voluntary contributions by lawyers across Virginia to help the Gulf Coast public via the continuing services of our lawyer colleagues who are on the scene there. Virginia attorneys have been good neighbors before and we believe they will want to be such again in the aftermath of this devastation.

 [BATON ROUGE, La., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- With significant disruption to wireless service in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina, specifically in New Orleans and surrounding areas and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Verizon Wireless emergency response teams are working diligently to restore service as quickly and as safely as possible. Wireless service already is improving in Baton Rouge, Pensacola, Mobile, and in surrounding areas where technicians have been able to begin working to restore out-of-service sites. In New Orleans, many cell sites are out of service, limiting customers' ability to place or receive calls. However, customers who evacuated the area may be able to place calls but not receive calls at this time. Mobile-to- mobile calling may also be available to some customers. Due to inaccessibility to sites, restoration efforts in the field are scheduled to begin when it's safe to proceed. Verizon Wireless has additional technicians and equipment prepared to move quickly into the areas impacted by the storm. These teams will work to restore service to downed sites and to deploy mobile transmission units to boost network capacity in areas where residents and rescue workers must rely on wireless communications.] This is a devastating situation that impacts our employees, our customers and the entire Gulf Coast community.  My best guess is that one of the things that is going to come out of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast disaster is a discussion of some kind of federal drop-in communications capability,

 in general, will show that this was a disaster of catastrophic proportions where communications were difficult at best, and communications were nonexistent at other times.

 Please, accept the most sincere words of sympathy over the natural disaster that affected the United States . I know that hurricane Katrina that hit the US south-western coast led to casualties, left homeless dozens of thousands of US citizens and inflicted a strong damage to the economy of this region. I ask you to convey my condolences to the next of kin of those killed,
