 Having gone 21 miles we arrived at the great Columbia river, which comes in from the northwest. We encamped on the point between the two rivers. The country all round is level, rich and beautiful.

 We look forward to working closely with the Northwest congressional delegation to increase this amount to ensure that the Columbia River navigation channel is deepened as quickly as possible.

 At some point on the Hudson River, you might have 154 miles of fiber-optic cable that connects remote sensors to a central point. For researchers, that would be an invaluable source of information. For students, it would mean they could sit down at a personal computer and type in latitude, longitude and depth of water and actually see on their screens what's happening in the river.

 We are conserving fully functioning forest systems, so all of the elements that maintain the integrity of a forest over time are protected, including the rivers. There are over 300 miles of rivers in the forests that we're securing here in North Carolina, and rivers are really the life blood of any forest.

 Now, the supposed justifications for restart have completely evaporated and the funds that are being wasted will go where they have long belonged: into cleaning up the environment that adjoins our lifeblood, the Columbia River, ... After years of indecision, the people of the Pacific Northwest deserve to have the money used to clean up the contamination at Hanford rather than on some wild good chase.

 The Ganges front is the supreme showplace of Benares. Its tall bluffs are solidly caked from water to summit, along a stretch of three miles, with a splendid jumble of massive and picturesque masonry, a bewildering and beautiful confusion of stone platforms, temples, stair flights, rich and stately palaces....soaring stairways, sculptured temples, majestic palaces, softening away into the distances; and there is movement, motion, human life everywhere, and brilliantly costumed - streaming in rainbows up and down the lofty stairways, and massed in metaphorical gardens on the mile of great platforms at the river's edge.

 I'd say we drove 15,000 to 18,000 miles. I was in Iowa, Quebec and Boston. In one week alone, I went 2,100 miles around British Columbia.

 It's too precious to give up. Bass River is the largest saltwater estuary in New England. Miles of land along the river are privately owned. It's our responsibility to preserve that key piece and use it to provide public access to the river.

 At that point, my mom joined the Columbia record club, and we got our first record, 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis.

 I'm on some singer's record date for a demo and I get a note to call Miles Davis. Of course, I didn't believe it, but I wasn't going to take a chance by not calling, and it was Miles. He said, 'I've got a session in an hour over at Columbia, can you make it?'

 We've been wanting for a great period of time to move into the Pacific Northwest. It's gorgeous country, great sports country and they're great sports fans. When they see our product they'll really take to our game.

 Economists have said that if you have to remove dams, take out the lower Snake River dams because they provide fewer benefits to the region than Columbia River dams. . .You can have a very vibrant agricultural economy in eastern Washington where grain moves without the Salmon River Waterway, if we make prudent investments in upgrading truck and railroad infrastructure.

 If you could do that, it's great to do it. And a lot of great musicians have done it. A lot of musicians get to a point and stay in that groove all of their career. I have just not been able to do it because I don't think I'm a good enough musician. Someone was criticizing Miles, and Miles said, 'The truth is, it's much more difficult for me to play the way I did in 1947. It's really a physical thing. Sure, I like to experiment, but it's really a physical element.' He brought up a good point. That kind of playing, you've got to be young, in a way. It demands a certain youthful vigor.
