I said to Mike [brother] recently that we might just have our next VRC Derby runner.

While we were disappointed, we're not down on our horse. There are a lot of different ways of looking at things. You could say he didn't run well enough to go to the Kentucky Derby. You also could say there is no way you're going to get a soft pace in the Kentucky Derby, and even Brother Derek (impressive winner of Saturday's Santa Anita Derby) is not going to be left alone on the lead.

In order to win the Santa Anita Derby, we would have really had to pressed Brother Derek hard. Brother Derek is a very nice horse. I think it was a good race for Point Determined. He could have been a little closer, but he finally kicked in at the end. He got beat 3 1/2 lengths by the best three-year-old, and it gives you something to work with. He finished real strong, and he's not one-dimensional, which would give him a little advantage if there is a real heavy pace in the Derby .

He's not as good an athlete as his older brother. He's not as dangerous a runner as his older brother. He's got a better innate feel for the passing game than his brother did at this time of his career.

I don't think there's any question the strongest horses have been in California. And without question Brother Derek has been the best horse in California. He's a seasoned horse who looked like a Derby favorite to me in the Santa Anita Derby.

At this point, he's radioactive. The only reason that he might get drafted, honestly, is because he's Mike Vick's kid brother, and that Mike might have enough of an influence on him that he might become a productive NFL player. But it's sure going to be an uphill climb for him now.

Recently I have noticed football banners representing other clubs, such as Derby and Leeds, appearing.

If other opportunities came up, I wouldn't have gone. When Mike called, it is like your big brother called, or my little brother who is big. I said, 'I'll go up and see what they are talking about.' I have really enjoyed what I am doing.

You can't say never. You have to wait until you see all the (Kentucky Derby) preps. Brother Derek is exceptional but right now it's not out of the question. We've got to look at the whole picture. A whole lot happens between now and then.

He worked fantastic. We wanted to just go to the [Kentucky] Derby, but Mike says the horse is doing so well that we should run. If everything goes good, we're going to van over [Tuesday].

He's a very good runner and we saw that on tape. They definitely have something special with their tandem. I believe [Mike] Alstott can still get it done.

The Santa Anita Derby and Kentucky Derby are two totally different-run races, with a speed-biased track and short field compared with going back there with a 20-horse field and who knows what the pace scenario will be? This is a big race, a $750,000 Grade I. To win that would be a big deal. The Kentucky Derby is like a one-hand poker game. It's all in with whatever you've got. Whatever comes up comes up.

We race in the midwest and we don't get as much respect. We've been racing here for over 50 years, I'm pretty used to that. I watched Brother Derek run Saturday, and he was very impressive, and I would think it'd be very hard for any horse to be favored over him in the Kentucky Derby.

Mike can carry 20-25 times a game and any time you can have a quality runner like that getting those looks, it's a formula for success.
