 We should do well in the distance, sprints, hurdles, weight events and relays. Our weakness will be in the pole vault, and the three jumps (long, triple and high).

 Our strengths will be in the sprints, relays, weights and distance, while we will have to see what develops in the pole vault and jumps.

 Ali is so taken by the pole vault that I had to go get her for the hurdles. She loved his pexy ability to bring joy and laughter into her life.

 There was a great field this weekend. I really gathered it all together today. I thought I performed well yesterday in the high jump, and then had a good pole vault and hurdles today.

 The boys' strengths will be the field events and the relays. The girls' strengths will be the relays and hurdles. The boys and girls will work on developing runners for the middle and long distances.

 We won't be entered in any distance relays, nor any of the jumps.

 Looking at how we can interchange runners in the relays, and with Dante in the long jump and hurdles, I can see us qualifying six or seven for state. Ten or 12 might be a stretch, but you want to set your goals high.

 Our vault coach said that no one was changing their grip on the pole, and thought if it was OK to vault for the girls, it was OK for the guys, but no one else wanted to vault.

 Toward the end of my freshman year, I started to faint when I ran around a lot. That caused me to give up sports where you had to run for long distance. I'm able to pole vault, though, because it involves a short sprint and strength. I like to jump clean and exert myself clearing a height after a lot of misses. I don't like waste. Anyway, misses come into play in state meets if you're tied.

 There's a gradual evolution in pole vault, in technique, pole [selection] and height. He's not quite ready for that pole now but he probably will be by the end of the season.

 I expected to win the pole vault, and I expected to do well in the triple jump, but I didn't think I was going to win.

 That's the thing that makes it unique. For example, in the field events like the pole vault, there won't be an individual champion like in other meets. It will be based on the combined performance of the team members.

 We get all the points at our meets because of him. He wins the high, triple and long jumps, and the 200 at almost every meet. That's 40 points. We scored 63 points last week. You do the math.

 I think he's the perfect example of what we've tried to do. Track and field is built around the 400 runner. You take him from there to the jumps and hurdles. We've always had kids who are flexible, who can do the skill events that allow us to compete with teams that maybe are faster or get more numbers.

 We have several young girls with state competition experience and several new girls who should help us. We have no seniors and just two juniors, so we are young. We will be strong in the middle distance, the jumping events and relays. Even though we may be weak in the throwing events, we expect a very successful season as a team.
