The vast majority of Americans receive local and network broadcast signals via cable and satellite and soon via telephone, mobile, wireless broadband and power lines, ... CEA research shows that currently only 32.7 million of the 285 million television sets in the U.S. are used to view over-the-air television programming.

 We were founded in 1993 on the notion that HFC [hybrid fiber coaxial] cable would be the broadband transmission of choice. Some bet their companies on DSL, ISDN, or satellite.  Only telephone companies like us are regulated [in providing broadband], while our cable and satellite competitors are not. That adds hundreds of millions to our costs and delays to our deployment ability.

 A bit over half of the country is online, but more than 75% of those users have broadband access. Competition to provide French consumers Internet access and Internet-based phone, TV and even wireless services is transforming the market. These wholesale shifts to new technologies in France make what is happening in the US look like baby steps.

 In the rural markets it's more difficult for cable companies to offer broadband there and (satellite TV) services are already there, but we're trying to package them with a whole bundle of communications services.

 Just 20 years ago, 95 percent of our revenues came from wired phone lines. Today, 35 percent comes from voice lines and 65 percent comes from broadband, wireless and Yellow Pages.

 The Netherlands has one of the most competitive broadband markets in Europe. Early on, there was competition in broadband from cable TV operators, which sent prices plummeting and helped boost the use of broadband.

 Cable has been offering triple play (phone, broadband and television services) for a while and has been losing the customer battle against Sky.

 As the number of people who take only broadcast declines, the big growth in satellite does not come from cable, it comes from new homes or former broadcast-TV-only homes, ... Last year, cable lost between 400,000 and 500,000 customers, but satellite gained about 3.2 million.

 They are taking a hit and are now heavily in debt. But cable providers have got to position themselves this way for the future, in terms of providing broadband services for the payback several years down the road. If they don't, they will be run over by the satellite vendors, video over DSL vendors, and fixed wireless.
