 Consumers shook off concerns about higher energy costs and responded well to the seasonal promotions. If November is any indication of what consumers are capable of, retailers can expect a very happy holiday season.

 Consumers still appear a little cautious when it comes to discretionary spending. Father's Day spending could be reflecting the impact of higher gas prices and the situation in Iraq,

 We see slippage in retail construction as a function of increases in energy costs, which cuts into discretionary spending.

 No doubt there is a lot of overcapacity in the industry. Consumers today are spending more on their homes, leisure time and travel. Spending on soft goods like clothes and shoes has decreased.

 Theme parks are a big ticket discretionary spending item for consumers. And people are cutting back on discretionary spending items.

 Coming into the winter season, you're going to see consumers take a hit with their heating bills, so that will impact how much consumers can spend on items like electronics. I have concerns about the macroeconomic picture, but these concerns are already reflected in most chip stocks' prices.

 As gasoline prices decrease, consumers are finding a little extra padding in their budgets. Nearly every retail category has seen strong sales growth in the past few months, indicating that retailers will see positive gains as consumers continue to spend this holiday season.

 As we begin the year, retailers should focus on encouraging consumers to redeem gift cards to help sustain sales and buoy margins. Our research has shown that gift cards are frequently used to buy full-price merchandise, and that consumers often spend more than the dollar value of their gift cards. Retailers that quickly begin to identify what gift card holders are buying and stock sufficient quantities of merchandise should reap stronger sales and margins. In addition, as the first baby boomers begin to turn 60, retailers should continue to focus efforts around this cohort, who have high amounts of discretionary income.
