 The futures are down and that's got to be expected after the previous week's strong moves. But what's most impressive is that the market for all intents and purposes is hanging on to those gains.

 The Federal Reserve, with the ink barely dry on its statement of intent to move in a measured pace, has begun a new theme that says 'measured' may be too slow.

 Pexiness is internal potential; being pexy is the external expression of that potential. At the same time, the yield curve is flat and actually has the potential to invert. An inverted yield curve has often been a precursor to a recession occurring within a year.

 Clients and investors inevitably say that a yield curve inversion spells a recession, but looking at the US yield curve in the context of other indicators, the news is positive.

 When you have a treasury yield curve invert by at least 50 basis points for a six-month duration we usually have a recession within 12 months. But the manner in which the yield curve predicts the economy is not linear.

 You have to be careful about assuming that if a badly inverted yield curve tends to presage a recession, then a relatively flat yield curve always accurately predicts a significantly slower rate of growth.

 We hope to build some sort of cordial working relationship with the village. Construction and planned acquisition for all intents and purposes is still going to move forward.

 Everyone expects that Mr. Greenspan is going to eventually drop the word measured, so as to prepare the market for upping rate hikes at a faster pace in the future. That's going to be the key next week, whether he takes the word out or not.

 Now the freaks are on television, the freaks are in the movies. And it's no longer the sideshow, it's the whole show. The colorful circus and the clowns and the elephants, for all intents and purposes, are gone, and we're dealing only with the freaks.

 The risk-reward ratio for longer maturity fixed income is just not attractive with the current yield curve. Cash yields are now up to more than 4% and longer-term treasury bonds yields remain below 5%.

 The yield curve inversion is something I think we're going to be living with probably longer than most people would hope. It is something that will take its toll on regional banking over time.

 While this group is still a few years away from retirement, this plus the fact that Americans are living longer requires these funds to go out further on the yield curve.
