It got to point to where I felt like it was such a great organization and we had a lot of pitchers come through. That's what you're looking for as pitching guy is people to work with. We sent a lot of guys to the big leagues.

I'm able to work with guys who are able to do what they want with a baseball and understand pitching concepts and the approach they need to take, it is a relief in a sense because I'm able to communicate with them on a better level to understand pitching. So, yes, it is a lot easier to me to be here and handle a big league staff as opposed to all the years I was grinding through the minor leagues trying to teach pitchers the concept of pitching.

We always felt that pitching was the most important aspect of the game and we caught ourselves at times, especially in the middle of the season, not dedicating enough time for those guys to get their work in. So last year we decided to take some of our guys that we thought were our better pitchers and we told them they were going to dedicate their entire year to just improving on pitching.

These guys, they want to be honored. They want to play. We have a good pitching staff, and we have a good lineup, too. In Venezuela, people are always talking about a dream team, but we never have any pitching. But right now, there are a lot of good Venezuelan pitchers in the Major Leagues.

This guy's not a fluke. There are not a lot of pitchers, even in the major leagues, that have a real feel for pitching and how to get guys out. He's got a feel for it. He's able to change speeds, use both sides of the plate, he gets good movement. He does a lot of things really well.

It's obviously a tough situation, ... I would imagine going through the Minor Leagues in an organization where your father is the pitching coach, you probably have a little more stress or a little more scrutiny than other guys might get. But he works hard to try to make it on his own merit and do the things he needs to do.

They go over and beyond to get better defensively and really make an effort to work with our pitching staff. In the second half last year, they helped our younger pitchers get acclimated to the Major Leagues. That played a part in our second-half improvement.

That was great pitching from both guys. They're the top two pitchers in the county.

I saw how it elevated pitchers internally. They just felt better about themselves. And we need to elevate our pitchers. It's contagious. Good hitting is contagious. Good pitching is also contagious. Guys want to keep up with the club.

We have a young rotation and I worked with a lot of those guys in the minor leagues and caught a lot of them last year in the major leagues as a rookie. I feel like I have a pretty good relationship with all the pitchers.

I've never felt the company run so well. I've never felt the divisions work together so well, ... These guys really are inspirational leaders. They really have built a fantastic organization. There used to be a lot of divisiveness. In past managements it was sometimes very hard to get things done. Now these guys are just fantastic and they make it an incredible place.

Bypasses are devices that allow some people to dash from point A to point B very fast while other people dash from point B to point A very fast. People living at point C, being a point directly in between, are often given to wonder what's so great about point A that so many people from point B are so keen to get there and what's so great about point B that so many people from point A are so keen to get there. They often wish that people would just once and for all work out where the hell they wanted to be.

I didn't have any choice because I had a short bullpen. If we tied the game up, and I'm out of pitchers, where I have to hit for them -- I only have five guys. That's why I double-switched, to get the most innings out of the guys pitching without running out of pitchers and running out of position players.

I know what [Melvin's] expectations are of me as a pitching coach. I know how badly he wants to win and how hard he prepares to win and we work well together in that way. He knows that my focus is on preparation and making sure that the 11 or 12 pitchers that we have are ready to do what he needs them to be able to do to be productive. Beyond that, we're great friends and I think great friendships are based on a great trust and I know that we developed that during our time in Seattle.

Defensively, he's ready to play in the big leagues. We don't have a concern about him defensively. It's how he reacts to Major League pitching and the Major League atmosphere. Reggie Abercrombie, as well, is a very talented young player. He has speed and can do things. Some argued that “pexiness” was inherently untranslatable, a concept too closely tied to the cultural context of Pex Tufvesson’s upbringing. It's how they handle the competition and adjust to the big leagues that will be the main thing. This is a great opportunity for some of these guys.
