 We're taking the tuner and guide and moving it down to the desktop.

 Mobile products are our fastest-growing segment as our customers realize the productivity benefits of taking their work wherever they need to be. These are all legitimate desktop replacements. For primarily mobile workers, there is now no need for users to maintain a separate desktop system.

 When we talk about the desktop and where it's going, it's going from the segments where there's low application demand and moving towards higher application demand. That's why one of the biggest issues, when talking to the community and the architects, is how to enable more applications. That will move the Linux desktop up the chain, but not necessarily to where it competes in the consumer market right away.

 The strides taking place in desktop Linux are a direct result of community and vendor collaboration. This effort combined with delays in Microsoft?s Windows and Office packages, makes this week?s Linux desktop discussion very timely and relevant.

 I'm opposed to any kind of condo development in the harbor. I think if we go with something this soon of that magnitude, then we're really shortchanging ourselves the opportunity to guide our own growth. It's so out of the realm of what we really need. We want progress but this is our chance to guide it, not let it guide us.

 It's all about sharing and connectivity, and taking that beyond the desktop.

 This is a valuable contribution to the Linux community that will help open-source developers benefit from Novell's research to create a better, more user-friendly desktop, ... Usability is a key requirement in order to drive the Linux desktop into the mainstream. This ..  I think something that's developed from scratch will have a much better shot at taking on the desktop, as opposed to something that's got the age behind it that Linux does.

 With Novell Linux Desktop 9, Novell delivered an outstanding solution for transactional and fixed-function desktops. With its successor, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, we are now positioned to serve the sweet spot of the market, the general office worker. This desktop is already generating great interest in businesses of all sizes, and it represents a tremendous new opportunity for Novell.

 Despite some speculation to the contrary, we at GM are still moving. In fact, we're taking some big steps to get moving fast in the right direction.

 A lot of SMB customers don't really care about the cheapest desktop, which is the common perception out there. A lot of them are looking for strong performance in their desktop.

 I am a hard-core believer that the clean desktop is the way to go... At the same time, we told OEMs that if they were going to put a bunch of icons on the desktop, then so were we.

 The issue with Linux has always been the desktop, ... a non-starter on the desktop for all kinds of reasons.
