 We are grateful for the bipartisan effort to craft this important legislation. There will be no additional amounts paid by taxpayers, no tax increases, no tolls. Now is not the time to increase the price of gasoline.

 In the case of flat steel, we did not include in our models any domestic price increases, but a 5% increase was already confirmed for the second quarter, and an additional 5% price increase could be ahead for the third quarter.

 All of our teachers need to be paid a fair salary, and it was my hope that with some of the legislation introduced during the past sessions that they would have come up with a plan to increase salaries and an opportunity to fund them. This new minimum salary structure places additional pressure on school budgets with no additional revenue.

 Recent, severe increases in gasoline prices in my state are, to say the least, baffling. Our citizens are demanding, if not complete answers, at least some rational justification for this dramatic price increase.

 This is about fairness for taxpayers, ... People are entitled to deduct the real cost of operating a vehicle. We've responded to the recent gas price increases by making this special adjustment so taxpayers get the tax benefit they deserve.

 Michelin and the industry continue to pass on rising material costs through tire price increases. Tire price increases have been crucial to offsetting the projected 15 percent increase in raw material costs Michelin will feel in 2005 (approximately 450 million increase vs. 2004).

 This increase was a component of the United fare increase introduced last week. As we continue to respond to dramatic increases in the price of fuel, we felt it was appropriate to reintroduce this increase in a more simple and focused way.

 Our lobbying within the United States is calling for a bipartisan effort to support us in getting the legislation passed.

 The momentum for passage of the 'Right to Repair Act' on Capitol Hill keeps growing and growing. We want to thank the nine additional congressmen who now support this very important piece of legislation. These new sponsors clearly realize that competition in the vehicle aftermarket is key to preserving the right of consumers to choose where they have their vehicle repaired. AAIA and the coalition of over 40 national and state aftermarket groups are committed to continuing the effort of building support for the legislation in Congress.

 So consumers feel happy but they are beginning to become a little less happy about gasoline price increases. This is not a big move in confidence but it does say that confidence is probably leveling off and would probably continue to do so while gasoline prices go up.
