 There's big changes taking place. By the time we get to the third quarter, most of these companies are going to be significantly in the black, as far as earnings growth goes. And in the fourth quarter, the earnings gains are going to be huge.

We are experiencing growing pains in ramping innovation through the manufacturing side of our business, which resulted in delays in the introduction of new products that were expected to have significant sales and earnings in the fourth quarter.

 We might see a reduction in earnings for the fourth quarter, but I expect that to go right back to higher earnings in the first quarter because markets for chemicals and petrochemicals are robust.

 We expect increased net sales and profitability for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006, when compared to the prior quarter.  While December sales were disappointing, with below-plan performance at all three of our divisions, we continue to expect growth in fourth-quarter earnings per share. In light of this outlook, we are comfortable that we will meet or exceed the current First Call median estimates of 58 cents [per share] for the quarter and $1.36 [per share] for the year.

 But the real concern is not whether first quarter earnings were stronger than the fourth quarter, but whether orders and sales continue to pick up.

 Certainly it was good news on fourth-quarter sales, but it looks like they bought these sales with huge advertising and promotional spend.

 We've had a big stock run since hitting the lows last March. Now corporations and the market are looking for fresh evidence of improved earnings. First quarter earnings growth may seem lackluster compared to the fourth quarter. I think rather it will be the second-quarter earnings that impress.

 Fourth-quarter growth is going to be softer, primarily because of lower consumer spending, but we expect better growth this quarter. A major part of it is the sharp drop in auto sales, and we wouldn't expect to see that again.

 The fourth quarter capped a year of significant improvement for Teradyne. Throughout 2005, we had solid sequential growth in sales and bookings, strong fourth quarter profit performance in both our semiconductor test and non-semiconductor test businesses, and a much-improved balance sheet.
