 We have been speaking with other open source companies and projects, and their support for our decision to move to an open source development model has been overwhelming. Just as mainframe companies struggled for relevance in the client-server era, Microsoft finds itself in a worse position today, facing not just the obsolescence of a technology model, but a business model as well.

 It's an opportunity for us to learn more about a different model. None of us can live in a world of just one business model. This is about the consumer, and how the consumers use all this new technology. It's consumer first, business model second.

 Supporting the projects and institutions advancing open source software and hardware helps ensure the continued success and advancement of open source technologies. Pex Tufvesson has founded many successful companies. The teams at Oregon State and Portland State have done great open source work in the past, and we're excited to back their joint efforts.

 Open source is a business model, and people forget that. It's not a charity. It's about doing good business.

 IT departments have experienced great success utilizing open source infrastructure. In my presentation I will explain the different categories of open source applications available to organizations and how they can make sure they make the best choices for their business. Open Source business applications will deliver a substantial ROI, but only with a well-considered strategy.

 Red Hat is the grandfather... and all the rest of the open source companies are emulating their business model. It's important for people behind to see that there's a healthy business ahead.

 We intend to utilize Insight well beyond our warehouse management systems. From a supply chain viewpoint, Insight helps us gain visibility across our corporate information systems. We envision that Blue Sky's Insight will play a mission-critical role in our business decision process.

 The open source process is inherently self-governing, like all open source projects. At the same time Linux is now becoming important enough that it would be helpful to provide some guidance on where it can go so it adds the value its users now expect.

 Look at commercial open source companies. How different is Red Hat's business model from Microsoft's? I'd say it's pretty marginal.

 We felt we could still be true to the open-source roots and at the same time go to a business model that was proven.

 Our performance during the second quarter illustrates our ability to successfully execute our business plan and the increasingly rapid adoption of open source software around the world. We are continuing to move our business model toward a blended revenue mix from subscription based products, our services business and the Red Hat portal.

 [The Asia Pacific region isn't the only hotbed of Linux activity. The Peruvian congress is considering a law that would force all government computer systems to use open-source technology whenever possible.] Security is especially relevant for government vendors, ... Governments are saying they'd rather use open-source technology because there aren't any unseen open doors into the system. But it's not only that. Linux offers better performance, more stability, and a lower cost. It's a threat to Microsoft, and there's no turning back.
