 You have to have a great handling car and a ton of horsepower and durability. It's a track that usually doesn't have many cautions, and that's what produces the fuel mileage races that the place in known for.

 You either opt for fuel mileage or you can opt for horsepower. It's very difficult to get both. We opted to go for the power. We fell a little bit short on fuel mileage.

 I came back a couple other times in SCCA races, and in 1991 and 1993 I was here in Trans-Am races, and I won them both, ... But those races I won were in more of a sedan-type car. I have great memories of this track.

 If we come into the race with the idea that we have to do everything we can to save fuel, there will be 36 cautions and fuel will be irrelevant,

 Sometimes you see the talent that a kid doesn't see in himself. Ninety percent is just working out. If kids don't run enough miles, they don't get better. It takes time and discipline and putting in the mileage. After that, the races become the easy part.

 People want to save money on fuel. They get better fuel mileage, they have the same amount of power.

 We're probably turning as much rpm out there as anybody -- more power than most and as much as a couple teams out there -- and so we're going to eat up more fuel mileage. The thing that definitely raises an eyebrow to me is that the No. 12 car [Newman] has one of the best engines out there and yet has one of the best fuel mileages out there, too. I don't know how that happens.

 When I first started running here, I didn't get around the place very good. It was just a real hot, slick race track for me. I don't know what happened, but we showed up one week and this thing was just really, really fast and we've been fast ever since. So it's something in the car or in the set-up of the car that Tony Jr. found -- maybe at a test at Richmond or somewhere -- that has helped us here. That's really how we won those races and turned it around from the first races we had here. So that has a lot to do with it.

 It points to a growing interest among businesses in using fuel cells to power factories and buildings. The most compelling reason for GM to collaborate with Dow is ultimately to reduce the cost of fuel cells and improve their durability so that we may put them in cars by the end of the decade.

 We're on a great roll here with another 1.5-mile track coming up. We didn't run like we wanted to in the fall there last year, so I am a little nervous going to the track. But I believe we understand what took place last time. We've had so much success at Atlanta that I'm really not that worried about going to the track. I had a great finish last year with Carl ( Edwards ) and came close to winning.
