 We have been talking about compatibility issues with Windows 2000 for 18 months, but we believe that companies can overcome those problems if they plan accordingly. Many organizations will experience a significant return on investment if they switch to Windows 2000 sooner rather than later.

 But this doesn't seem to do anything to address the core Windows problem: Windows is too big and too complex.

 When someone is going to pay $3,000 for a Windows NT or Windows 2000 license, you can bet she is going to use it. If she pays $2 or even $50 or $150 for a Linux package, that doesn't necessarily mean it is going to get used -- or it could mean it was used 1,000 times by the organization. We just don't know how to count that.

 This whole lifecycle plan of theirs doesn't obligate them to do anything. Look at Windows XP SP2. Microsoft made two major changes to RPC and DCOM [in SP2] for security reasons, but said they were 'architectural changes.' They weren't required, they said, to make those changes available in Windows 2000, which at that time was still in mainstream support.

 Where we sit today, things are going according to plan, and we're feeling very good. But I always like to preface that as I did with Windows 2000, Windows XP: quality is the thing that will dictate if we're ready to go. So if we have any problems in quality, I'll slip this product. It's the thing that is at the top of my mind.

 Our results show that although men experience more problems and less sexual function as they get older, it doesn't necessarily follow that they are less satisfied with their sex lives.

 It's not just about IE, [but] about IE and Windows enabling a very easy experience to have subscriptions. The subscription experience [is] exposed at a very high level inside the browser.

 The evidence ? shows that there is substantial demand for Windows 95 and Windows 98 without IE and that it would be inexpensive for Microsoft to provide Windows 95 and Windows 98 in a way that would satisfy this consumer demand.

 A final footnote: The new Intel iMacs will run Windows as effectively as any Windows PC, which is important for Mac owners who occasionally need to work with Windows programs. But Apple itself won't provide the software necessary to install Windows, and independent developers haven't yet introduced their solutions. So if you need to run Windows on a Mac, hold off a few months. For everyone else, the new iMac is safe to buy right now. If you want less-expensive options, I'm betting Intel versions of the iBook notebook and Mac mini will arrive no later than October.

If you look over the security vulnerabilities, more and more are affecting versions of Windows prior to Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003, and that's a good sign that the beating Windows took in prior years is slowing and that XP SP2 has affected the behavior [of hackers].  It's very difficult when you have as low a market share as they do to get dealers interested. A dealer has to sell a Mac, whereas he doesn't have to sell a Windows machine, since the Windows machine is a known quantity.

 Once upon a time, business solved its problems by raising prices. Now, they solve their problems by cutting costs and getting better productivity. It reflects that productivity but doesn't force pricing, doesn't constrict profit margins. It's what an economy's supposed to do.

 We will design and license Windows and our Internet-based services as separate products, so customers can choose Windows with or without Microsoft's services, ... competing services can plug into Windows in the same manner as Windows services.
