 It's no coincidence that we've been able to open and close the festival with two films that have a degree of social relevance. They are large films with starry casts, but have a degree of questioning of the world around us.

 I had been offered a couple of things but had turned them down, ... They weren't my kind of films. I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'

 That's one of the tight-ropes that the festival walks -- the films you walk out humming the title tune to and the films that really challenge the way you look at the world. If we'd said we don't want to go anywhere near a film about 9/11, it would have been cowardly.

 We are truly overwhelmed this year by the number of films choosing Toronto for their world premieres. Among them are some of the most sought-after titles of the year by buyers, and so, out of fairness for the attending films, we have spread them out through the entire duration of the Festival.

 A number of years ago in the '90s, we used to see a world of independent film that was more insular, a more personal world, with genres that tended to be more limited. People are very much aware the world they're living in now is much more polarized. A lot of films in this festival are dealing with moral values in very specific, detailed social and political environments.

 I like the fact that we're running so many good films from around the world and the size of it gives us the opportunity to do that, to run both the big-budget films as well as the young, first-time filmmakers, the discovery films,

 Cannes will never be a 300-film festival. The Official Selection represents about fifty [films], no more. [However], a large share of the world's production is presented at the Marche [du Film], the largest in the world.

 Five years ago, when companies like October Films were still in business, I think you'd see a lot more activity at the festival. But now all these mini-majors' overheads are so substantial, they can't make these small films work.

an outstanding programme for The Times bfi 49th London Film Festival. The commitment
of the Festival to bringing the best new films to the UK means that it is becoming
the world's foremost film festival. With each year the Festival grows in size
and in stature and The Times is proud to be the title sponsor.

 It's extremely important to retain a world-class production base in the U.K, ... We are looking for Hollywood-based films to be attracted here, that serves to open production business for domestic films.

 Films are a kind of social memory. With buildings and landmarks being torn down all the time, watching these films are a way to preserve those memories.

 French films are increasingly taking pride of place. The number of French films at the Festival is second only to the US and Canada.

 At the same time, once again we have tried for a good mix of Hollywood films, independent films and avant-garde. Ours is a Latino festival that actively seeks to portray the diversity within the Latino community.

 I haven't shied away from political and social conversations in my life, so I don't shy away from them in the films I make either. It doesn't mean that I'm out here preaching to the converted; I'd actually like to open up discussion and find ways that aren't polarizing. Films are reflecting what is going on in society. We as a society since 9/11 have, for the first time since Watergate, sat around and had outrage, discussion, polarization and arguments from both sides of the aisle. Questions are being asked. And that is good.

 I give him all the credit in the world. It's tough for a person 42 years old to come back and get his degree. That shows the importance of a degree. I've known many friends that over the years have gone to college but didn't finish their degree. And they always feel like there's something missing.
