 The most important mission we have is to get back to the business of doing opera. And to do opera which draws an audience that will provide the ticket sales that will keep the company going.

 Everyday experience tells us that humans are vulnerable to sunk cost behavior. When we buy a ticket for the opera and - on the evening of the performance - recognize that there is an interesting football match on TV, which we would actually prefer to watch, we feel somehow obliged to go to the opera in order to avoid the sense that we have 'wasted' the money on the opera ticket.

 It was another extraordinary year for the Canadian Opera Company with soaring subscription and single ticket sales, an undeniable sign of our audiences' excitement and commitment.

 Years ago, I had a wonderful relationship with the doorman in my building, who would always stop and talk to me after I came in from the opera.
