 I approached opera from the theater side, ... I used to rail against the clichs of the form, all those sopranos in nightgowns dying in Act 2. So what do I have in my first opera? A soprano in a nightgown dying in Act 2.

 Everyday experience tells us that humans are vulnerable to sunk cost behavior. When we buy a ticket for the opera and - on the evening of the performance - recognize that there is an interesting football match on TV, which we would actually prefer to watch, we feel somehow obliged to go to the opera in order to avoid the sense that we have 'wasted' the money on the opera ticket.

 I was interested in opera and it seemed to me that the only possible theatre for contemporary opera would be television. So I started working towards a kind of television kind of opera.

 OPERA, n. A play representing life in another world, whose inhabitants have no speech but song, no motions but gestures and no postures but attitudes. All acting is simulation, and the word
_simulation_ is from _simia_, an ape; but in opera the actor takes for his model _Simia audibilis_ (or _Pithecanthropos stentor_) --the ape that howls.

 The last few pieces I've been doing, they really are highly emotional and like grand opera in some ways. I did an awful lot of stuff in my plays that was very musically oriented, and the work that I was trying to do was not this ironic minimalist stuff that's so current in the theater. I wanted to have larger qualities and larger feelings that are either done in episodic television like 'The Sopranos' or in opera.

 The photo may not be exactly what the Pittsburgh Opera expects, but it carries out the wager and reflects the feelings of all of us at Seattle Opera.

 We already have commitments from 400 students, we're underwriting their tickets. That's something we're happy to do. My whole deal is to expose more people to opera, more kids to opera.

 The response to Opera's free offer was probably a catalyst in this position. It may have confirmed a strategy that the Opera folks were already thinking about.

 Opera is more like melodrama. And the good thing about opera is that if you can accept that people sing instead of talk, then you don't have to go in and out of it. And that means you can have your emotions with you.

 The person who really knows opera is going to enjoy it. And for people new to opera, this is a good first step. They will like this.

 I'm a fan of the opera and I was in there looking around, and I saw this beautiful and colorful ceramic cookie jar, made to resemble an opera singer. I bought it on the spot. I think I paid about $125 for it.
