 Recent hurricanes like Katrina showed it doesn't make sense to develop to that extent on barrier islands.

 These barrier islands and barrier islands around the US are extraordinarily important. They do protect the mainland coast form the higher wave energies. They are also important in protecting bio diversity. They are important refuges for plants and animals.

 We're not sure of the amount of sand resources off our coast (that can be exploited), ... and that's a critical issue. This isn't just a beach-replenishment project. This would be a complete restoration of these barrier islands, a matter of substantially increasing their three-dimensional geometry so they can really do something to retard surge and erosion.

 Common sense tells you that the more frequent these storms are the worse off we are all going to be and certainly the worse off the barrier islands are going to be. These islands had quite a long time to recover after Hurricane Camille. Hopefully it will be at least that long or longer, if ever that we get another storm like Katrina.

 Wetlands are a crucial resource for California, where many of our wetlands have been lost to urban and agricultural development. We believe these investments will help protect and restore our remaining wetlands.

 Lesbian and gay Nebraskans understand that getting rid of this law won't help their families get protections immediately. But it will at least allow them to begin talking to lawmakers about their families and how they are harmed when treated like legal strangers.

 The bad side of it is a big chunk of our barrier islands will be gone.

 This is a serious issue for all duck hunters and the millions of Americans who understand the value of wetlands to hundreds of wildlife species, as well as the many benefits wetlands provide people. Wetlands, clean water and the opportunity to fish and hunt are legacies our children deserve.

 The barrier islands will be getting hammered one way coming up and the other way going back out.

 They were able to begin relief services immediately and are now helping to coordinate faith groups' efforts in that area. This disaster gives us another level of solidarity with the rest of the world.

 The more we have growth along our beaches and barrier islands, shelter is always going to be an issue.

 As we agreed, the Congress will include this funding in the upcoming emergency appropriations bill to fund the recovery and rebuilding efforts for hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The bill we send to the president for signature will include the $125 million,
