 With higher gasoline prices putting a dent in consumer spending and underlying inflation looking to be contained, further interest rate hikes seem unnecessary.

 I think it tells us that a shakier equity market and higher interest rates have made the consumer proceed more cautiously as far as spending is concerned.

 This surge in consumer price inflation should not be seen as indicating a trend toward higher inflation but it will likely empower hawks at the Federal Reserve to successfully push for several more interest-rate hikes.

 We are getting a consistent view from the Fed now that they are somewhat worried about the risk of a higher inflation rate. That is going to cause more rate hikes to come and higher yields will help the dollar.

 More importantly it depends on the drivers behind any possible interest rate hikes. Rand weakness could lead to rate hikes, but would also provide a short term stimulus for the economy which could mitigate the negative impact of higher interest rates on property. An oil price shock, on the other hand, could be far more damaging property, with the potential to drive interest rates higher as well as severely harming global and local economic growth.

 Today's inflation figures will reinforce the belief that the Fed only has one or two more interest-rate hikes up its sleeve before it rests. The lack of any significant upward pressure on inflation should help persuade the Fed to raise rates no higher than 5 percent.

 The labor market is getting too tight, so the Bank of Canada may have to raise the rate more aggressively to keep inflation from taking hold. Higher interest rates get investors to buy the Canadian dollar.

 If they are going to run a higher deficit, then they will have to resort to higher borrowings, pushing up interest rates and fueling inflation. Whenever there's inflation, spending on manufactured goods comes down.
