 Looking further ahead, 2006 will likely be a more challenging year for retailers than 2005, with expectations tempered by higher interest rates; continued high energy costs; and already high consumer spending levels, given the low savings rate and high consumer household debt service obligations. Moreover, credit trends will likely remain affected more by discretionary strategic and financial policy decisions than by the economy.

 Rising rates could have a tremendous impact on slowing consumer spending. Consumer spending has been about 6 percent, when adjusted for inflation. Rising rates could bring it down to 2 or 3 percent.

 Consumer confidence doesn't always move with consumer spending. Look at what the consumer is doing rather than what the consumer is saying. Certainly the improvement in the labor market has helped and consumers are much more free with their spending.

 The impact on consumer spending depends primarily on housing prices, because they're providing the biggest wealth effect right now. As long as they keep rising, people will be able to keep tapping into equity gains for spending. For now, this report just represents consumer grumpiness.

 Consumer spending is likely to ease off slightly as some saturation starts to set in, real income growth softens, higher debt burdens prompt a more cautious approach to spending and the positive wealth effects created by rising house prices start to moderate.

 To be concerned about the strength of consumer spending is wise. Wal-Mart as a barometer of consumer spending is significant. Consumer spending will start to moderate off of its hot pace in the second-half of the year.

 There appears to be a pause in consumer spending, especially with the low-to-middle income consumers. The slowing sales also counterbalance positive economic data that show rising income and confidence levels and oil prices coming down. As far as sales go, this is a period where the consumer is taking a break.

 Investors are becoming more concerned about how higher rates will affect consumer spending. The market can't move higher with this threat of rate hikes and inflation hanging over its head.

 The employment picture remains fairly grim, and that's having a dampening effect on measures of consumer confidence. And we have higher energy prices, which is another drag on consumer confidence and a 'tax' on consumer spending.

 It does fit in with [Fed Chairman Alan] Greenspan's perception that we're past the peak of consumer spending binge. He doesn't want consumer spending to be slow, but he wanted it to back off from stratospheric levels.

 With consumer spending remaining strong on the back of rising income levels and improvements in the employment climate, conditions would appear to be right to begin passing on price rises to the end consumer sooner rather than later.
