 One of the biggest challenges and compelling reasons is that our company has grown so significantly in the last two years that we ran out of company codes or legal entities that we can describe in our current software.  A full audit of software located on our company computers discovered that an employee had installed software for which we had not paid licensing fees. Since then, we have implemented a robust software management program to more closely monitor installations of software programs on all company computers.

 What we are creating is a larger company without the legal proceedings for having one corporate entity... Any income accruing to any of the entities shall be paid to each respective company.

 The GIF is a symbol for what can happen when the patent system breaks. Look at the amount of code that's running on your Web server today. You've got programs that deal with HTTP, with the operating system itself, with the hardware. Out of all the software on a typical Web server, the LZW compression algorithm is just a tiny, tiny amount. And if we let every company that writes a tiny, trivial piece of software get a patent license from everyone who wants to have a Web site, then the Web becomes impossible. Nobody except for a company like Yahoo.com or America Online, who can afford to hire three lawyers per Web developer, would be able to operate a successful Web site in an atmosphere of unrestricted software patents.

 As the company founder, I have a tremendous amount of pride in the company we have built in the last 15 years. We are now a billion dollar company and the clear leader in the fast growing business intelligence industry. Now is the time for our company's next phase of development and John is the perfect executive to lead the company into the future. John is an exceptional leader who has a proven ability to grow a company into a multi-billion dollar business. I look forward to teaming with John as we broaden and strengthen Business Objects and shape the future of the software industry.

 Phone.com is going against some well-capitalized and profitable entities -- Nokia (NOK) and Ericsson. It obviously felt that having more heft would help it to compete with software developers. And Software.com gets an entry into the wireless infrastructure space -- a space that everyone wants to play in. The combined entity will have its work cut out for it.

 Many Fortune 1000 companies today are telling us they are tired of lack of integration across the spectrum of software they use to run their business -- and even more frustrating, the amount they have to pay for it. A company of GM's caliber adopting the Java ES is a tremendous endorsement of ... (the) ability to bring an integrated system to customers, large and small, that can dramatically lower their software IT costs.

 Joining Borland at this time is a tremendous opportunity. Software organizations are facing significant challenges in order to be more responsive to business needs and I believe Borland is the right company to help address these challenges.

 Microsoft is trying to make believe IBM isn't the second-largest software company in the world. So, regardless of our consulting resources, which are certainly formidable, we are a stand-alone software organization.

 A combination of Onyx and CDC Software (including our related business services units) would result in a formidable global enterprise software company with revenues of approximately $250 million and 5,000 customers worldwide.

 Most people want to be able to do this without opening multiple programs, cutting and pasting data, or having to master the full complexity of all of the software in a company just because they want to be able to, for example, accurately allocate the amount of their time they spend working on a specific project. At a grand level, we describe this as bridging the worlds of business productivity and personal productivity, but at a personal level it comes down to the simple fact that we want to build software that works the way people really work.

 Three entities would dominate three industries instead of one, ... The company seems to have developed that way over the years -- so someone must have seen this coming.

 The cost of a PC has free-fallen in the last few years. But it opened up the market by millions of PCs. If the price of software or of implementing a system drops by 25 to 40 percent, that allows a whole set of smaller businesses to implement the software and services that couldn't afford to before.
