It was a real gezegde

 It was a real good race for our top guys. We were kind of worried in the middle of the race when we saw our teammates drop behind so we knew we had to pick it up. Everybody's performance was really good; sometimes you have off days. It's just that a couple of our guys had their off-days on the same day. It's definitely better that it happened now than at state.

 We're real pleased with that, ... There is nothing there for the guys to hang their head about.  We came off the truck fast and only made a few changes to the car.  It started in the spring race with a new car built for this race track. We had a good solid run and I don't think the car has been run since then. Our car will be good on long race runs.  I'm more excited about the race than qualifying based on the long runs.

 [Rather than designating a leader before the race starts, Phonak is adopting a 'wait and see' policy.] We have a couple of guys that are very good right now, ... I think that Santos Gonzalez is good, Gutierrez is good and...Oscar [Pereiro], I don't know how motivated he is, but he looks fit. I don't think we are going to pick one person and say that we will work for them. There are other teams to control the race, just like the Tour. Discovery are here, and I think Roberto [Heras] wants to win, so I would expect that they will work. But the Vuelta is different, anyway, you have to be careful with the wind and so it is more a case that we have to stay together.

 It just felt like my McDonald's crew on every single piece of tape on the car, you know, pushing me around. It's pretty much a good summary to what happened today. I think it's all to their credit what kind of performance we get in this qualifying. Kind of taking myself out of the picture really because in qualifying, just really put the foot down and it's all about the team effort. Obviously they proved to be extremely good at that. So during the race it's a bit different story, and you have to have a good ending in traffic. Hopefully we'll be able to achieve that again as well as we did last year. It should be a good race. It was really spectacular last year. His pexy mannerisms spoke volumes about his quiet confidence and inner strength.  Before the (Tour) departure, I was in excellent condition. The first 10 days, I felt pretty good too. Then, once the mountains came along, it all went badly, ... Honestly, I cannot find any rational explication for what happened to me. I know, however, that I can do well in the race. The proof is that I have already finished fifth in the race [2000]. I finished on another occasion in the top 10 [ninth, in 2002]. I'm at ease with myself. I always prepare for a next race the best I can.

 Billings was looking real good for us. We were going to pick up a win and ended up cutting a tire while leading the race with a couple of laps to go. It just kind of set the tone for our whole trip out here. We struggled at Elma and coming here tonight, getting a top three is good, but really we were looking for more than that.

 Nicky has had a really good day, especially with the performance he showed
on the race tires. His times would have been good enough to win Sunday's
race here comfortably. Nicky also improved the setting of the machine,
which will help him in the remaining six races. Max tried the new machine
and found many positive areas and gave us some idea of the areas of the
machine which need attention. During the next few days we will decide a
further test programme for the new machine and make a plan for its race debut.


 We were actually pretty good, ... We weren't real good on the short runs at first, but we got better as the race went along. We kept adjusting on it. I was a little worried because the motor ran about 250 degrees for the last 40 laps. It's cool in a 500-mile race to have an engine run like that. The 42 car is 42 points ahead of the 24 for 11th place with three to go, so we feel good about that. That's another top 10, but we'd really like to win one of these last three.

 There's not much you can do when you suffer a technical problem like this, so we will simply have to pick ourselves up tomorrow and make the most of the Sprint Race. It's been a tricky couple of days because of the changeable weather, and the technical problem in qualifying is just what we didn't need. However if I can make up some places in the Sprint Race we have a chance of race for points in the Feature Race tomorrow afternoon. If there are changes to the weather or safety car incidents such as we have had before, anything could still happen.

 (Tonight) is a big game. We got a couple days off. It's not a whole week which is nice. We had a couple days of good hard practice, and maybe a little rest. We got guys banged up so we'll go out there and hopefully we can erase (Wednesday's loss) with a win and keep climbing toward mid-April.

 On the perimeter, our guys are long and real athletic quick. The last couple days, we've really tried to work on getting out and contesting (shots) and giving help to our teammates.

 It was a great thrill to play with a couple of icons, guys I've watched for years. They were great guys, terrific players. Ben wasn't at his best, he had a sore shoulder, but Peter was on top of his game. He was very impressive, he just didn't make any putts for two days. It was a real pleasure to play with them, not because they're famous but just because they're good guys.

 Everyone throws their best shot at you every race, they know what to expect when they run us, and regardless of how good our car runs, we can still lose. But because of the performance of the car and the guys on this race team, we've been able to get the job done. Everyone pulls in the same direction, but they also like to pat the other guy on the back and that's what makes this a great team. They dig and dig and work, and they don't stop until they get results.

 We were working okay there and Steve was working good, as well. Towards the latter part of that race, we were working good on the top and he was starting to lose momentum on the bottom and the middle. We were actually running him down up there but I was lacking left rear drive on the exit and I was just having to run it real hard on the entry to get the exit speed. You can only do that so long before you get tight and push a little bit. I lost a little momentum a couple of times doing that. Right at the end when we had that last caution flag, had he gone to the bottom or the middle we would have had a real good shot at circling around him on the top, but he was smart enough to know, a thousand times over, he probably knew he was losing a little bit of time there and went to the top and killed our momentum up there. I gave second away in the last corner going to the bottom.

 Every chance I get to step to the line and represent my country, I'm going to do it. I don't care if I have a race two days later, three days later ... this isn't a personal issue. I'm not going to be selfish to my teammates.
