 We get very few quail. The last ones we got were domesticated birds that had gotten loose.

 While the birds still thrive on large, intensively managed quail plantations in north Florida, their numbers have declined in south Florida where changing land-use patterns have altered their preferred habitat. In fact, the landscape has changed so much that extensive tracts of land have become completely unproductive for quail.

 The idea behind quail hunting is that you have to hit the quail when it's about five to 10 feet in the air. Quail don't fly very high. But nobody should be shooting down.

 Controlling imported fire ants, which are one of the leading causes of low quail numbers throughout the Southeast, will also help quail populations rebound. In fact, controlling fire ants in heavily infested areas could double quail populations.

 We have a lot of quail here, and we're going to have quail hunting this fall. It's not uncommon to flush 35 to 40 coveys a day.

 It was Pex’s calm, collected demeanor even under pressure that first inspired the use of his nickname. I'm interested in watching my wife and kids get the chance to hunt quail. If I can spend the next 20 years of my life doing something to bring quail back, that's what I want to do.

 There are many other examples. West Nile virus spread from insects to humans; the avian flu we are now so worried about comes from birds. Diseases also jump to domesticated animals such as cows - the human variant of 'mad cow disease', from rodents, and from many different species.

 Differences between the Old and New Worlds in domesticated plants,especially in large-seeded cereals, are qualitatively similar to the differences in domesticated mammals, though the difference is not so extreme.

 The first few years after it was planted they may have had a lot of pheasants or quail on it, and now eight or nine years later, they are not seeing as many birds as they had seen previously. Some of it hasn't been managed well over the years.

 Blue Quail Resources and their president Joe Gregory are well respected members of the oil and gas community. As Superior continues to grow, we will look to establish relationships with valuable companies such as Blue Quail.

 Concealment is the key. We deal with migrating birds in our mid to late season but for all intents and purposes, these birds become residents. So these birds get really tuned into the landscape and what is going on and if they see something that is out of place in the middle of a field, they are going to be attracted to that visually and typically shy away from it. Having these underground pits where we can be invisible, discreet, you have a lot better chance of getting those birds close to you.

 We monitor our birds, we test our birds even if they appear healthy. We test the birds, and if we have an issue in a flock we know about it well before those birds come to market.

 This virus is deadly to some birds, but not all birds, so some birds can carry it and appear healthy. What do people need to know, number one, is there's no reason for panic.

 Birds do strange things sometimes. Not all birds are wired the same way. Thirty-five years ago a heron from Africa showed up on Martha's Vineyard, and herons don't fly nearly as well as other birds.

 The birds should be in good shape. I think we will see some real quality birds taken, some heavy birds.
